THE SUPER LAND TAX.
DIARY NOTES OF A STOCK AND STATION AGENT. [These notes- describe authentic casot of hardship which are the result of the r'* - *"'.* leri».»tion imposing Super Tax on Uacd. Thev are supvlie<* b > * reputabi* ftrni. , XVII. Mr "Q": This man served as a soldier during the Great War, and upon his return to New Zealand purchased at the height of the boom an excellent grazing property. When the slump came, his financial position was hopeless, and he was compelled to leave the property without a penny. Later he had the opportunity t<y take over a large grazing run without payment of any deposit and found a guarantor for the payment of the stock aud plant. The unimproved value of this property was in the vicinity of £40,000, and the land tax approximately £4SO. Last year he managed to clear £ 190 as his reward for diligently managing and working this property. Now he is faced with a payment of an additional £4BO for special land tax, while it is anticipated that his returns from wool and surplus stock will be at least 25 per cent, less lh::u last year. He has just received a small inheritance through the death of a relative, and says he can find his additional land tax and his ordinary land tax, which will not be far short of £IOOO out of this legacy; but he asks my advice about his future policy. He has already offered his property to the Government at their own valuation, but the Government have declined the offer.
