THEFT OF RING.
PROBATION EXTENDED. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 26. Plans made by Bruce Burns and Phyllis Marjory Thorn, aged seventeen and nineteen respectively, to leave Auckland and obtain employment, with a view to getting married, did not fully materialise. They reached Wellington, but, being unable to find work, funds became low, and, after pawning various articles to get money to buy food, they stooped to stealing a ring valued at £37 from a jeweller's shop and found themselves in the hands of the police. The ring was taken from a tray by the girl and handed to Burns, in whose possession it was subsequently found. From enquiries made in Auckland, it was stated in Court, the characters of the two had been satisfactory, and the Probation Officer recommended probation. Mr Page, S.M., agreed, and fixed the period at two years, directing that the girl should return to her people in Auckland, and ordering that the accused were not to associate with one another during the period of probation.
