TRANSPORT BILL.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER. £THB PEEBS Special Service.} WELLINGTON, November 25. In order to remove a ■wrong impression as to the effect of the recent legislation passed by Parliament affecting the Transport Department, the Minister for Transport (the Hon. Mr Veitca) made a brief atatement to-day defining the position. "I want to make it quite clear," said Mr Veitch, "that the newly-created Transport Department is not being abolished. The impression appears to prevail in the public mind that the abandonment of portion of my Transport Bill under the pressure of opposition at the end of the recent session means that I have given up the idea of a Dominion-wide organisation of transport. There is nothing further from my mind. While it is unfortunate that some very valuable provisions which were contained in the Bill have had to be dropped in the meantime, it is my intention to recommend Cabinet to approve a comprehensive measure to be introduced early next session. I am quite sure that the public realise the need for comprehensive legislation in this direction, and I am not going to be dismayed by a temporary set-back such as I had to meet in the closing hours of last session. That only means postponement of the reform* which I am quite determined to go on with."
