Ltd., has recently been made by the delivery of the Empress of Canada, which has been re- j cngined by her builders, the Fairfield Shipping and Engineering Company, Ltd., of Govan, Glasgow. The ship was built in 1922, and had a designed speed of 19 knots. This speed not sufficient to allow her to compete in service with the new vessels, the Empress of Britain and the Empress of Japan, which are being built on the Clyde, and itw as therefore decided to install new j single-reduction geared turbines of the Par-. sons type, using superheated steam, and j capable of developing 40 per cent. more horse-power than was possible with the original machinery. The new turbines have a designed horse-power of 26.000 under service conditions, and 29.000 s.h.p. maximum. The ship recently completed her trials on the Clyde, and an average speed of 22.5 knots was attained. Formerly, when on the Pacific service, the speed attained under the most favourable conditions was 20.6 knots, at a consumption of 284 tons of fuel oil per day. Since her conversion, the Empress of Canada has made a westbound trans-Atlantic passage at an average speed of 20.53 knots on a daily consumption of 175 tons of fuel oil.
