That £*20.000,000 will represent a rednction in the incomes of many individuals, not alone those who ara growera of wool and of wheat, but also of those with whom *ue growers of wool and wheat deal. On hu return to Sydney from the meeting of the Loan Council the State Treasurer of New South W ales said the amount of loan funds available to the Commonwealth and State Governments would not be increased beyond the amounts agreed upon at the meeting in August. The council hid before it certain adrice from its advisers, and. after verv careful consideration, decided that it would bo impracticable to increase the loan allocations at tho present juncture. The council is to be called together again a few week* hence, when the position win be farther reviewed.

ARTIFICIAL SILK. BXTZNT OP OPERATIONS. Tb«r* has b*en ft considerable variation in the profits of artificial silk enterprises, the returns of some being much below anticipations, and in others of a substantial enough character to emphasise the menace the artificial product is to raw wool. Some interesting information in regard to the operations of one company is to hand by the last mail. In this case a Continental manufacturer went to England two years ago. He bought a mill and set up in the manufacturing of artificial silk fabrics. In September of this year gross' P"£j* for the year amounted to i.IJ-l.Bcw, tempered with £89,666 for the preceding 12 months. A dividend of 10 per cent, was paid, besides a script bonus to shareholders of one ordinary share for eTery 10. No other public company in Bradford showed anything but a lose. This shows that a serious blow must hare been dealt to the woo: industry by artificial silk manufßelt' has been stated authoritatively that the use of artificial silk has displaced 1,000,000 bales of colonial wool The Home authority quoted says thai in regard to the present standing oi wool it has to be admitted that th< raw material is cheap. It cannot U said, at l*sast, that ita coat is preventing it from going into consumption In point of fact it is costing littli more to the manufacturer than n 1914—p«rb*ps 2d to 3d above pre-wai in England
