LAWBEATH DISPUTE.
♦ SETTLEMENT EFFECTED. [THE PBESS Special Service] DUXEDIX, November 12. After a delay of eighteen days the unloading of the steamer LawTjeath at Port Chalmers was commenced this morning. Late last night Mr W. Taylor, general manager for Kempthorne, Prosser. Ltd., agents for the Lawbeath, received telegraphic advice that a settlement of the dispute had been reached. The Waterside Workers' Union also received advice to commence work this morning. A call for labour was made bv the stevedore at Port Chalmers this morning, and at 8 o'clock fifty-five men started work on unloading the tons of phosphates, which the Lawbeath brought from X'auru for discharge at this port. Five holds are being worked. The exact terms of the settlement have not vet reached either the agents or the "Waterside Workers' Union. Captain McFadven's visit to Wellington apparently expedited the settlement of the dispute, which, it was understood, was caused by the Searaeirs Union and the Waterside Workers' Union endeavouring to obtain redress for the m°n who went to Papar-.m gaol and insisting that the crew should be paid under New Zealand conditions. The unloading of the vessei is expected to take about a fortnight.
