At the conclusion of the rental Mr Henderson thanked the choir for the muskml treat given and also congratulated Mr Lane in having pasted his examinations a: gained his A.T.C'.L. certificate. The choir were the guests of the ladies at supper. This evening, at Everybody's, Town f l-ill. the William Haines cornedv drama. 'A Man"* Man." will ho screened. The scenes are all laid in Hollywood, hut it is a story for the man in the far-away village. _a* much r.s for the voting man struggling a lons in that great city. On Tuesday, the picture. "Hoofbeats of Vengeance'' ni!l he shown, while the great film, ' { hantr." will be screened on Thursday. Box plans are at The Bristol, and day sales are at the Golden Gate. WOODEND. The meeting of the Domain Board was presided over bv Mr A. E. Appleton. The tennis club, having'expended over £27 on improvements to the courts, was granted a subsidy of £lO. A new fence has been erected on the Domain frontage facing tho side road. It was resolved to erect containers for waste paper and other litter on the U;ach reserves. The monthly meeting of the Wood-end-Waikuku Branch of the Plunket Society was held on Wednesday, Mrs Henshaw presiding over a fair attendance. Trie nursu's reports indicated that the branch was doing good work. With the approach of tho longer davs the Woodend Harmonic Society decided to go into recess until April of next year, and an end of session social waa held in tlw Methodist Sunday School on Thursday. There was a good attendance of members and friends, who had An enjoyable time in games and musical items contributed by Messrs Kirk (humorous songs), Browning (violin selections), and W. Nelson (songs). During th» evening the president (the Rev. J. R. Nelson). on behalf of the member*, presented Mrs Shea, the pianist. wrtn»a rhinestone necklace in recognition of her servicer during tho sessional practices and various concerts. Mr Robertsbaw also extended to the conductor, Mr W. Nelson, deputy conductor. Rev. J. R. Nelson, the secretary, Mr J. Little, and the treasurer, Miss E, Boland, the thanks of the societv for inraluable sernces rendered during the year. The report of the treasurer revealed a credit of £6 lis; out of this the sum of £3 3s was voted to the trustees of the Methodist Church for the use of schoolroom, piano, and electric light. The society is expecting to make a round of the district on Christmas Eve, carol singing. The recent egg drive held throughout the Methodist circuit (Woodend-Sefton) on behalf of the Pa pa mi i Orphanage netted 1«0 eggs. The various churches contributed as follows : —\\ oodend, 28 down: Waikuku. 42 dozen; Sefton, 32 dozen: and Amberlcy, eight dozen and Good progress is being made with the erection of a five-roomed house for the Woodend schoolmaster to replace the present structure which has been in existence o5 ycßrs. LEESTON. Under the auspices of the Ellesmere Golf Club a social evening was held in the old Lceston School building, when there was a good attendance of members and others. The guests had the option of dancing or of card playing. Good music for the dancing was supplied by Merger's Orchestra, and Mr W. Bohan was M.C. DOYLESTON. At a meeting on Thursday evening, convened by Mr C. M. Blake, it was resolved to form a Swimming Club and to request the School Committee to hand over to it control of the school swimming bath. The following officer, were elected:—President, Mr C Ai. Blake: vice-president. Mr G. V. Cooke; captain, Mr W. Doyle; secretary, Miss Brizzlc; committee, all present, with power to increase their numbers The subscription fees were fixed at 5s for men and 2s 6d for women It was decided to procure copies of the rules of other clubs with a view to using them as a guide for a set of local rules. Arrangements were made for an inspection of the bath to decide what repairs were required. SEDGEMERE. Promoted bv the School Committee, a successful and largely attended fancydress dance was held in the Sedgemere Hall on Thursday. Mercer's Orchestra provided the music and Mr A. W. MARSHLAND. The very welcome ihoweis at the beginning os the week had a marked till-' t on Tops, particularly hay, although much more is wanted. Root crops are doing well, particularly e.iny potatoes, which have made a rapid recovery after the disastrous frost. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee, there were pieseiit M'»r< I), Goode (chairman). G. Chisnall, H. Hibbard, A. F. Roberts, and W. Waugh. The headmaster reported that the children were delighted with tht'ir wild pit. and everything was going along smoothly. The inspectors report of their annual examination of the school was read. Members congratulated the headmaster and his .staff for the very excellent report submitted. The treasurer produced a bal-ance-sheet of the euchre and dance uhich showed a very satisfactory result. A vote of thanks was passed to the ladies of the district for their valuable help in providing refreshments for the entertainment. Mr Goode brought up the question of swimming. ;ind suggested that the Belfast Freezing Works might be approached for permission to allow the senior children the use of the baths. Messrs D. Goode and G. C'hi<=nall were appointed to go into the matter. Corlespondence from the Education Board stated that the redecorating of the interior of the school would be gone on with. At the monthly meeting of the Hail Committee, there were present Messrs 11. Hibbard (chairman), D. Goode, G. Chisnalt, Leslie Wilson, 11. Monk, J. Schmanski. J. Sibbald. and W. Waugh. The chairman reported that a working bee had put wire-netting round the fence to protect the recently planted privst hedge. It was agreed that members meet next week to do a bit of cleaning up round the grounds. At a meeting of the Sports Club, Mr Kingston announced that he would pive free .>f charge a paddock for f ticket until such time as the club was jible to secure a permanent ground. Mr Kingston's offer was accepted, and a cricket club formed, with H. Hibbard as captain. Mr Stack-wood generously offered a piece of his section for a "temporary tennis court, which was accepted, and a meeting is to he held in a fortnight to go into the matter of a club. One of the old residents of the district. Mr Moles, of Preston's road, died on Tuesday. At a meeting of the Library Committee there were present Messrs J. Bhckburn (chairman), Leslie Wilson, and Mcsdames Waugh and Blackburn. The '-hairman reported that interest in the library had been well maintained during the year. The question of new hook* was discussed, and a further purchase will be made shortly. AKAROA. The Borough Council met on Wednesday. Present —the Mayor (Mr GArmstrong), Crs. A. R. Munro, T. E. Tavlor, F. J. Wright, W. Pool. C. W. Leete, W. W. Williams, T. McCaughan. and T. Masefield. A motion of sympathy was passed to Sir R. Heaton Rhodes in the death of Lady Rhodes. A request from Messrs Meares, Williams, and Holmes regarding the subdivision of a propertv on the Esplanade wan granted. Kinsey and Co., Ltd., wrote asking tire Council to reduce the wharfage charges to allow the boats trading to meet the competition of motor lorries. It was decided not to niter tbe present rates. A request from the Peninsula Horse Show and Pastoral Association for November 22nd to be proclaimed a holiday was granted. The harbourmaster notified that there were no regulations compelling owners of outbound motorboats to put silencers on their engine exhausts. The arrangements for the Armistice Day services were left to the Mayor. It was decided to confer with the County Council in reference to repairing the bridge at the north entrance to the town. It was resolved to call tenders for grubbing the streets. A recommendation from the Waterworks Committee that the users of extraordinary water supply he charged a further sum of £3O 7s 6d after the end of the financial year was adopted. The matter of repairing the fence around the baths was referred to the Baths Committee for a report. GREENPARK. The monthly meeting of the Greenpark School Committee was attended bv Messrs G. Lassen (chairman), H. Everest, J. Bartley, and H. Marks. The report and balance-sheet of the recent school concert were presented, the credit balance being £ll 12s. The committee expressed pleasure at tire result. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr and Mrs Marks, also to Mr H. Thomas and Mr Bartley for contributions to the school gardens. It was decided to hold a special meeting next Monday evening to make arrangements for the annual picnic. Six" of the puoils were awarded certificates for their essays on the recent Winter Show, the "winners being E. Matthews, D. Bray, P. Bartley, Dave Bray, R. Marks, and J. Bartley. The headmaster reported that 15 new pupils had been admitted in the last few weeks, the roll r.ow being 67. The members of the Greenpark Methodist Church have decided to furnish a stall at the forthcoming Methodist garden party, to be held in the grounds of Mr Peryman at Tai Tapu, and gifts of produce, cakes. needlework, etc.. will be collected by the ladies of the congregation. Miss Wells, who spent some week'? in Greenpark on holiday, has returned to C'hristchurch. Mr and Mrs Robertson and family (ChrUtchurch) are spending a holiday in Greenpark. TAI TAPU. On Thursday evening tbe Methodist Church was filled, when a programme of sacred music was contributed by the St. Andrew's Presbvterian Church Choir. of C'hristchurch. Lemarc's "Andante"' was played bv Mr R. Lake, who also accompanied the choir and the -oloists. The following i%ere the soloists :—Misses Sinclair. Mary Miller. N*. Dixon. Mrs Evans, Messrs Wilson. A' thf annual meeting of the Di-i----sar.del Sports Association on Monday evening arrangements will be made for the annual sports fixture on New Year's Day. A bowling match will be played by the local rinks against four United Club rinks from Christchufch this afternoon. The tennis teams will play matches against Waihora this afternoon. These games had to be postponed last week on account of the Banks Peninsula race meeting, held at Motukarara.
