Phillips £i:i "s -d. bv instalments of £1 a month, in defauft 14 days' imprisonment. riood Damage. \t the meeting of the Levels County Co'nncil ' ve.sterday, a discussion occurred on trie serious washout by the Opihi at \to-ahernia during the floods of July and Augiut last, licpairs have involved n great deal of. work on tho part of tli.-' 'icraldine County Council, and the engineer (Mr C. E. Brcnmcr) reported that it was hoped to have them stiffi- . >nt!v advanced in a fortnight's time t < cove- risk** of further traffic on the main highway, where the washout took ptare. Mr K. Mackenzie, chairman of tho i icraldine County Council, together with th» engineer, waited on the Levels County Council with a view to coming t> on" agreement in regard to the cost of effecting repairs. Mr Mackenzie said ♦ hat in the past the Geraldine and Levels Countv Councils had worked amiril.lv together, but it would be much more satisfactory if they could come >o some agreement so that there would be no misunderstanding in the future. The Geraldine County had built the Arowhoniia bridge and Levels had paid half the cost. He contended that as the Levels ratepayers were afforded protection bv the works erected by the Geraldmo County, they should pay a greater proportion "of the cost of making good tho damage. If that were agreed to, the Geraldine County would undertake to do the work on the Levels side of the river. Under the original agreement no mention had been made of the approaches, but he had ascertained from the Public Works Department that the definition of a bridge meant the approaches aa well. So far as the protective works upstream were concerned, they contended that Geraldine's responsibility should cease at the top of the permanent stop-bank. Mr T. W. Brosnahan said that many rears ago the settlers of Seadown had protested against tho Opihi bridge being shortened. Mr Mackenzie replied that that did not affect the position. The proposed pwtective works which would be paid for by the Geraldine settlers would be protecting those in the Levels County. However, Geraldine County would go 50-50 from the terrace on the Levels side to the terrace on the Geraldine side. They would pay the same on the fillingin, but would "not go any further than the top of the permanent bank. Mr T. B. Garrick, chairman of the Levels Council, said he was of the opinion that Geraldine shonld go 50-50 for the whole 39 chains up the river. On the deputation retiring the chairman remarked that an agreement should be arrived at if possible. Mr R. G. Cleland suggested that representatives of the two Counties should make an inspection of the locality, when a better idea would be obtained. It was decided by a unanimous vote not to agree to the proposals of the Geraldine County Council. The tender of Mr M. Seyb at £224 7s for a stop-bank at Arowhenua was accepted. WAIMATE. Being dissatisfied with the price for eggs locally, producers in Waimate and district have decided to form an egg circle aimilar to that which worked so •ncecssfully many years ago. At the monthly meeting of the Waimate School Committee, the headmaster (Mr B. A. McKeown) reported that the roll number was 599, with an average attendance of J5.W.4. It was arranged to hold Ihe annual concert on December 6th. * A most unusual bond of friendship has been formed on a Waimate farm between a Jersey cow and a pig. Recently »he owner decided to sell the pig, and when tht buyer came to take possession of it the eow evinced a decided disinclination to part with its companion, and showed ber resentment by attacking the buyer of the pig and knocking him over. Mr A. E. Cadwallader has been appointed assistant master at the Waimate School, and is expected to take up his dntica after the Christmas holidays. Miaa Elsie B. Macdonald, of Clinton. has been appointed assistait mistress at the s.-hool. For some months the Waimate School has Keen without the use of a section for the purpose of agricultural work, but this need has now been filled by the offer of the Waimate High School Board of a quarter-acre section close to the school. The committee accepted the offer with thanks.
