The operations in connexion with the , widening of Springfield road on the , western side, from Bealey avenue to Derby utreet. were next intpeeted. With respect to the l«*ft radium of the western corner, it was explained that the oak, a welt-grown tree. at the corner, would be preserved. Some other trees also are to he preserved by allowing them to remain on the new footway. At the river diversion work, upstream from the Carlton bridge, the ' construction of the new rubble wall on the eastern bank is well in hand. The crack on the western wing of the bridge was looked at, the City Engineer remarking that it was opening and contracting 1-.l:2nd of an inch according to the temperature. The nuestion of giving acres* to the river. from the weitern hank, to vehicles. wa« discussed, and the question will be taken up with the Domains Board. The inspecting party then saw the continuation of Malvern street, and inspected a portion of Thames street, where *n open drain on the roadway , was discussed. Banks avenue was then visited, and the work in hand protiding for widening portions of it was seen. The riverside boulevard from Dallingtoo bridge was inspected, the gaps on the southern hank being pointed out. The reeentiv completed reconstruction of th? portion of Waltham road, from Moorhouse avenue southward, was inspected, and also the progress being made with the reconstruction of Oarlyle ■treet in concrete. From Colombo street eastward a fairly long stretch. one-half the width, has been done. The reconstruction i» being done for a width of 4f>ft, in two sections of 20ft. On the way to Smart's Pond reserve. Svdenham Park was passed. N'n operations are yet in hand for the re-erec-tion of the iron fence on Colombo street frontage. At Smart's Pond gratification was expressed -with the progress mad". The young era's appears to be growing well.
