BYRD EXPEDITION.

# §EAMEN AND FIREMEN WANTED. Messrs H. A. Rhind and Co.. Ltd., Lyttelton, have received a letter from Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co., Ltd., Dunedin, agents for the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, stating that there is still a shortage of three or four volunteer A.B.'s (m,en who have served at least two years as ordinary seamen), and for two volunteer firemen for the crew of the City of New York. The A.B.'s should have had experience in sail. The expedition has received hundreds of applications from volunteers of the type who have had no experience in sailing ships, but they are of no use. The Eleanor Boiling has secured her full coihplement. Worlc is proceeding apace on the two vessels. The City of New York is in dock for cleaning and painting, and will be followed on the stocks by the Eleanor Boiling. The huge quantity of stores required are being sorted preparatory to being loaded into the ships in their correct rotation. Orders are arriving daily from Commander Byrd. The spare dog teams left Wellington by the whaling ship Kosmos about three weeks ago, in charge of Mr Al. Innes-Taylor. There is no guarantee that they will be landed at Little America, but if they are urgently required it is possible that one of the small chasers will be charterei-to convey them from the Kosmos to the Expedition's base. The City of New York, after every spare inch of space has been filled with coal, will sail from Dunedin about December 15th "for the Barrier. She will use sails only to reach the ice, thus conserving her coal. Th« Eleanor Boiling will follow about the end if December, and will meet the City of New York at « rendezvous outside the ice barrier. Both vessels will essay to pass through together.
