MODEL HOUSING PLAN.
MANCHESTER'S PROJECT. The Manchester City Council has approved the general scheme for establishing a model housing estate at thenshawe, and constructing a road and parkway that will traverse the new estate and connect Princess road, Manchester, with the Altrincham-btock-port road, across the river Mersey. _ The new road will be 80 feet wide in the City; it will be constrncted_ with a 50-foot carriage way, with 15-foot parkways on either side. A bridge over the Mersey will be SO feet wide, between parapets. Between Kenworthv lane and the Altrincham-Stockport road the highway will be constructed so as to form a parkway of an average width of 300 feet. This will contain a 40-foot carriage_way, four 5-foot footpaths, and 13-foot cvcling track. " Thn total cost of the road scheme is estimated at £185,000, of which amount the Citv of Manchester will require to provide £81,000; the remainder is available from Government grants. The Wythenshawe housing project will see the corporation sponsoring the erection of 10,000 new homes at a cost estimated at £0.000.000. The annual charge to be met by the corporation in the scheme will be £47,500. Some 5000 acres of property, wooded and pastoral, will be transformed into a suburb of the City. The corporation already owns 60 per cent, of the three < 'heshire towns of Northenden, Bagulev. and Northen Etchells, and these will be incorporated in the new suburban territory, which will help the scheme of a Greater Manchester. The new community of Wythenshawe will not be a mere suburban adjunct; it will be a self-contained and self-sup-porting community. No house building of o greater density than 12 per acre will be permitted on the property. In addition to the housing and business areas, there will be a central civic centre. itli subsidiary centres for shopping. Also recreational grounds, a go!f course, and various public buildings will be included. There will be no property developments fronting on the parkway project, a factor which will greatly enhance the amenities of the road to the travelling public. The Wvth«nf*hawe town plan is integral with the North Cheshire regional plan, and the two projects will transform a great area into perhaps one of the choicest community developments ever carried out in England.
