BERTHING THE MAHENO.
INCIDENT AT AUCKLAND. [THE PKEBS Special Servic#.] AUCKLAND, November 5. A strong northerly wind and incoming tide, coupled with a temporary reduction in the power available from her turbines, caused difficulty at one stage of the operation of bringing the Maheno from the anchorage off Devonport to her berth at the Queen's Wharf. When the anchor was raised shortly after 8 o'clock the vessel had to turn into the wind and tide in order to make a course for the wharf. Apparently lacking sufficient way to do this, she drifted across the harbour into Mechanics Bay, carrying with her the tug which was in attendance to assist in berthing her. Passengers who were on deck feared at one time that the llaheno would drift on to the rocks of the wave deflector, but the danger was not real. Whfen it -was clear that the vessel eould not manoeuvre, the captain had the anchor dropped until the tug was in the correct position to give the required assistance in turning.
