THE COURTS.

MAGISTERIAL. TUESDAY. (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined 10* and costs, in default 24 hours' imprisonroent' REMANDED. Allan Muirhead Duncan, aged 25, a seagrass worker, was charged with having unlawfully converted to his own use a motorcar valued at £325, the property of F. J. Dibden. Chief-Detective Carroll asked for a remand until the 19th inst. on account of other charges pending. The remand was granted. SERIOUS CHARGES. Hugh Macdonald, 31 years of age (Mr 11. J. Burns), and a native of Scotland, was charged with doing an indecent act intending thereby to insult a girl aged 9 years. He was further charged with attempted indecent assault on the same child. After evidence had been heard, accused pleaded not guilty to both charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. He was granted bail on the same terms as before. THEFT CHARGE. Henry Herbert Pearce (Mr R. Twyneham). a carpenter, aged 26, was charged with stealing a set of imitation pearls and a set of rosary beads, the property of Annie Rodger*. Chief-Detective J. Carroll said that he understood that accused was drunk when the offence was committed. He had a fairly long list of previous convictions. Speaking on behalf of Pearce, Mr Twyneham pointed out that the previous offences were nearly all of a trivial nature. Hia trouble seemed to be drink, and it -was while under the influence of liquor that all the offences had been committed. He was admitted to probation soma time ago on conI dition that he took out a prohibition order against himself. All the previous thefts had apparently been done on tha spur of the moment, and in no case was anything very valuable takes, nor bad he made any attempt to dispose of these articles. It was a difficult case for the Court to deal with, and it was questionable whether it would be of any benefit to the community if he were put out of the way for a period. The Magistrate asked whether it would be any use extending his probation. If that were done, and he came up before the Court again be would be dealt with sharply. "I to just wondering whether you' be » man.'' said the Magistrate to accnsed. "Yoa have got a wife end four children and » good home to think of. I shall extend your probation for twelve months. but if you come up again I'll give you the maximum. N'ow, be a man this time, accused, and B ee if TOU caa stan d up to it," concluded the Magistrate.
