NIGHTMARCH WINS OVER £17,000. The result of the M<']bourne Cup '•an*'"'- 1 - much julnlation in Ncvr Zealand racing circles, and the fact that the three placed horses were bred in the Dominion, and the victor and runncrnp are owned and trained in Canterbury. accentuated the greatest triumph achieved by Xew Zealand-bred horses racing overseas. The successes of the visiting contingent at the A..J.C. Meeting. and also at the minor Meetings in*N' W Wales during the past coup! "f months, were notable. but for !»i>r>e.s from these shores to till the three places in the mo«t important racing event in Au=; ralia and Xew Zealand was not expected by the keenest student of form. Good as Nightmarch's recent performances have been, these were undoubtedly overshadowed by Phar Lap's four decisive wins in succession, in each case in time that could probably have been bettered if he had been called upon. He, however, has failed, as have other good three-year-olds, successfully to compete over long distances with the more seasoned horses.

Nightmarch lias had u marvellous run since he loft Riecarton for Sydney, and has only been once out of the money, and that was in his first effort on the trip. It is interesting to relate that when the -weights for the Metropolitan and Epsom Handicaps were cabled to Xew Zealand the treatment meted out to Nightmarch was considered on all sides to be extremely harsh, and the idea of sending him over for any handicap races was practically abandoned. Ilis trainer was emphatic on the point on more than one occasion, and even suggested that it would be a waste of money to undertake the trip, especially when Limerick appeared to have a mortgage on the weight-for-nge races. The colt's owner, however, had tl?e final say on this occasion, and in announcing his decision said he had made up his mind to have a holiday in Australia. Even if Nightmarch only got place money in the weightfor-age contests and paid his expenses he would be satisfied. All this was mentioned to Mr Louisson and McAulay on the Randwick racecourse after Nightmarch won the Epsom Handicap, and both agreed that very little would have caused a change in their plans. McCaulay's idea was to stay in New Zealand, where races ii■ the spring looked easy to win, but we can imagine what his opinion is now. Since Nightmarch left he has won well over £17,000, including two gold cups val -d at £2OO (Melbourne) and £IOO (Cox Plate) respectively. On top of this, the sums received from other quarters would swell the coffers of his connexions to a considerable extent. Nightmarch, who was purchased at the end of his two-year-old career for lOOOgns by Mr Louisson, did not impress track-watchers when he joined the active brigade at Riecarton, and after being beaten in a race at Ashburton many were of the opinion that he did not represent a four-figure proposition. But time has worked wonders, and the colt has improved far beyond the expectations of even his party. It is computed that including yesterday's race Nightmarch has contested 32 races, his record being as follows: — First. Second. Third. Unp. i At 2vrs .. 2 1 1 i> ' At 3yrs 6 4 22 At 4yrs 5 1 2 1 13 6 5 8 A. McAulay deserves every credit for the care and patience he has displayed with the horse, and it is a feather in his cap that Mr Louisson has placed enough confidence in him to leave all arrangements for the horse's racing in his hands. Now McAulay, after many years of ups and downs at the game, may, if he so desires, retire a rich Paquito's second placing to Nightmarch would not occasion any great surprise, but the keenest judge could not foresee him beating Phar Lap. It was thought that if he got third money his connexions would be well satisfied. Mr H. A. Knight was anxious to have Paquito home for the New Zealand Cup, but agreed to his trainer's suggestion of continuing the trip to Melbourne, F. D. Jones using the argument that if the gelding secured place money in either the Caulfield or Melbourne Cups he would collect as much, if not more, than the stake for the big Riecarton event. With a, win early in the trip, a third in the Metropolitan Handicap worth £6OO, and £2OOO for yesterday's performances Paquito has more than paid his way. It is now probable that he will contest the Auckland Cup, an pvrnt won bv his half-brother, Malaga, in 1921. Nightmarch \s win would.be costly to the bookmakers, as he was solidly couple 1 with the Caulfield Cup winner, High Svce. but Phar Lap would have struck a heavier blow had he won. forbury park t.c.
