CITY VALUATION.
COMPLETE FIGURES NOT AVAILABLE. Now that the Assessment Court has concluded the hearing of objection* to the new valuations it might be assumed that the amended figures relating to the total valuation of the City would be available. Aa a matter of fact it will be some weeks before the alterations have been made and the new totals reached. Not only the alterations made by the Assessment Court bat those settled between the objectors and the Government valuers (the larger proportion of the total objectors) without going before the Court have to be entered o* the rate books, replacing the original valuations. The alteration of the original valuations has necessitated, in some instances, the re-writing of a whole page of the rate-book in order that the entries might be clear and distinct. It is anticipated that when all adjustments have been made the total reductions made will not be nearly as great in amount as has been estimated by the municipal authorities, who allowed 2j per cent, for alterations and reductions. If this should prove so the City Council will have a larger amount available for rates than is covered by the estimates.
