However. they must anticipate lower prices ruling generally. The Wheat Pool deserved all the anpport it could get from growers, for in the matter of stabilisation of prices is perf formed valuable service, especially in support of those farmers who were under financial oHligation*, in that they were not forced Jo jell in the flood of offerings at low pricas. Adverse weather conditions ruled oonsiderably at ?ow ; ng time this year, and he thought the acreage in the coming year would be somewhat reduced. In conclusion he conveyed to the general manager, branch manager?, heads of departments, and all members of the staff, the best thanks of the directors for the good work d-one which had resulted so •a*l«factorlly to the Association. The chairman then formally moved the adoption of the report ,md balance-sheet. Mr Malcolm Campbell, A-ho seconded the motion, said there w-er* a ;ood few "calls" in arrears, and asked what the Board of .Directors intended to do in '.he matter. The chairman replied that the ''calls" were gradually being paid, and it was hoped eventually to collect ail of the money. Tho directors, however, had not yet dealt with tha question of "calls" in arrears. Mr R. 3, Hurst said he was a little disappointed with the chairman's report. He had not made any mention of Mr ,Tobn Anstey who, as chairman of the Overhead Char|re« Committee, had done valuable work in finding out weaknesses in administration, and i» effecting improvements. Further, he regretted that the services ot the general manager. Mr A. H. H. Shirtcliff, Had not baen adequately commented upon. Mr HhirteHff had piloted the Association through troublous times, and had had to bear the brunt of the responsibility, When Mr ahirtoliff was appointed manager there was a d«bt of £300,000 owing to the bank and to the depositors, and he had been largely responsible for the improvement in the position. There had been a great deal of criticism in the past, as this debt had not been divulged, but if this had been done it would have involved disaster. However. the position had been greatly improved, and He put it down to Mr Shirtcliff, who had not been afraid to do the right thine; for the Association. (Applause.) Mr O. h. Twentyman said he would like to congratulate the Board of Directors an its position, and expressed a hope that it would be even better next year. He substantiated Mr Hurst's remark* In regard to Mr Anstey and the general manager. He pointed out that only £l2l 6s 8d had been paid to the Association's superannuation fund. He asked if the Board were doing anything in regard to the inauguration of a comprehensive scheme. The chairman replied that the Board of Directors fully appreciated th« valuable services rendered by Mr Anstey and the general manager. He had paid a tribute to their services at Board meetings, and did not think it necessary to do so again. In regard to a superannuation fund, it had been found that it must he a contributory one, to include all the employees. Some years ago a scheme bad Been put before the employees, and it was found that some of them were making provision themselves, and if compelled to join the scheme it was more than they could afford. Cnless all the employees contributed the scheme would not be a success. Mr 3. Anstey expressed thanks to the ahairman and Mr Hurst for their remarks. He had certainly done a gr«at deal of work a* chairman of th» Overhead Charge* Cotu»ittee, and also on the directorate, but individually a man eonld do Very little. Xt wa-s the loyalty and co-operation of the members and staff which had been responsible for anything that had been achieved. The general manager most have spent many sleepless nights, and 1« was largely dne to his effort* that the Association had improved its position. In referring to the superannuation scheme, Mr Anstey said that it wonld coat a tremendous sum of money. The directors, however, recognised that as • larse earptover of labour it was necessary to do something for the older employees. A small scheme hod seen inaugurated whereby every employee after thlrtoea years of asrvlae, and on attaining 60 years of age, would he en titled to m mlnlmnm of XT a week for the remainder of bis life. A comprehensive scheme, embracing all the employees, would break under its own weight. The report was adopted unanimously. "Vainer's Scport, Tho Association's valuer (Mr T). f». DAIRY PRODUCE. PROSPECTS FOR NEW SEASON. Optimism, flavoured with cant ion, as to the prospects for the coming dairying season wag expressed by Mr H. S. Peryman, ehairouui of directors, at the annul meeting of the Tei Tapn Dairy Company yesterday afternoon. Whilst prospects as regards prices were not, is the directors' judgment, quite as sound aa last year, they showed a reasonably sound state of affairs for the coming season, ha said. The prospects—and in this connexion it was well to remember that this was only an opinion—in their judgment lay in and around Is 6d per ib of tatter-fat. At the commencement of last season it was indicated that the return to suppliers, if their jndgment of the market was correct, should b» in the vicinity of Is 7d; the satisfactory average return of la 6|d fulfilled this forecast, but it must be appreciated that opinions thus expressed ware, after all, opinions only, because It was not within the power of an? organisation or individual consistently and accurately to forecast the world's market*. BEEF PRICES. PROBABLE SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES. [Tnl 9UM flpscisl larrie*.] A TICK LAND, September 27. The opinion that prices for beef will Continue at a fairly high level for some years owing to the falling off in the ■apply from the Arguutine wan adTaiimed by Mr J. K. Makglll, chairman • f directors of the Auckland Farmers' Freeaing Company, Ltd., at the aunual meeting, Jn support of thin view Mr Mukgill quoted article! written by Sir William Jlaldaiie for the Loudon "Times" with tbe object of awakening Great Britain to the possibility of a shortage and to the advantage it would be to produce a larger quantity within her own borders ©r within the Empire. In the articles the hope waa expressed that Australia might yet, in spite of past discouragement, set to work seriously to meet the uversM* beef requirements by grading *p tier eattl* and increasing her herds. "This last opinion is one to which it may he wise for us here to give some heed," said Mr Makglll. "Is it not possible that if we devised the beat method and need the best stock we might be able, even in this country, to do some-, tiling more than wo have been doing toward maintaining the required beef or Utal supplies to Great Britain with advantage to ourselves and to the Empire, instead of allowing foreign countries to maintain their grasp upon so important • requirement of our people."
