BUSINESS GOES SLOWLY, j "URGENCY" REFUSED FOR | TAXING BILU. ' [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September An unsuccessful attempt was made by the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) in the House of Representatives to-night to secure ungeney for the second reading of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill. The Prime Minister made his application at 10.20 p.m., while the Minister for Labour (Hon. Mr Veiteli) was speaking, but Mr Speaker informed him that it could not be made during the debate. The Prime Minister (turning to Mr Veitefc): You had better wind up your speech! (Laughter.) Sir Joseph asked Mr Speaker how he could get over the difficulty. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Coates): By a hardship clause! (Laughter,) The Prime Minister said lie wanted the House to get on with the second reading. Mr Speaker said he was afraid he could not help him. He could, however, take the pleasure of the House on the question. The Prime Minister: That is all we can do. The question that urgency be accorded the Bill was put, but there was objection, and the Minister for Labour continued his speech, the House rising at the usual hour with the debate still uncompleted.
