TRADE WITH KAIAPOI.

POSSIBILITY OF SHIP USING RIVER. A special meeting of the Waimakaiiri Harbour Board was held last night, when consideration was given to Mr C. Morgan Williams's proposal to charter a boat to trade to Kajapoi. Mr Williams wrote advising that as a result of Captain Munro's inspection of the river he had advised that before he could go further with the matter he would require an assurance from the Harbour Board that they would, if his company decided to bring a boat into Kaiapoi, carry out the following requirements: —(1) Mark out the channel; (2) erect a signal station near the bar; (3) appoint a qualified and responsible person to signal boats as to the safety or otherwise of the bar; (4) do whatever else may be necessary to the safety of vessels of light draught suitable for bar-harbour and river navigation. The vessel which is under consideration has a maximum loaded draught of 7ft 3in, and has been especially constructed for bar-harbour work. Mr Williams asked the Board to communicate with the Canterbury Steamship Co. if it was agreeable to giving the required assistance. It was decided to write to the Canterbury Steamship Company giving the Board's assurance to carry out the requirements as set out in Mr Williams s letter, provided sufficient notice was given of the company's intentions to bring a boat into tho river.
