SUNDAY AMBULANCE DISPLAY.
FREE CHURCH REBUKE. (TRO3£ OTT* OVHK COBMtSPOHDWTT.) LONDON, August 23. The Free Church of Scotland has rebuked the Duke and Duchess of York for witnessing a Sunday ambulance demonstration and then presenting medals. This alleged desecration of the Sabbath was discussed by the Commission of the Assembly in Edinburgh. The Rev. W. Fraser, a minister of Govan, said they felt it very keenly that two people so beloved as the Duke and his ladv should lend themselves to such a thing. He suggested that they ought to send a resolution to tho Duke of York "that such an insult to Scotland should not take place again." The minute presented to the meeting ran:— "It is unfortunate thflt persons holding high places in political and social life did ill service to the public by failing to use the influence which they possessed for emphasising that this land would be well to be considerate nf the Divine command " In the end the Commission adopted a resolution in general terms, noting with regret the continued public floutiJfe of the Sabbath day. The resolution declared that the Free Church renewed her testimony on behalf of the Fourth Commandment as being without exception, even to the great ones of the earth. TTie Earl of Strathmore, father of the Duchess of York, has replied to the Free Church condemnation. To a local Pressman he said r—"The holding of the ambulance display on Sunday gained my approval I agreed to be present because it was the only day when all the railwaymen could be present at the same time."
