TIMARU.
MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, Mr C- R. Orr Walker, S.M., presiding. For failing to produce a license to ride a motor-cycle when required to do so by the Traffic Inspector, Thomas Clements was fined 10s and costs. Stanley Earle (Mr W. D. Campbell pleaded guilty to having unlawfully assaulted Helen Martha Belcher, a married woman. Accused was released on probation for twelve months, special conditions being that he should remain away from Timaru during that period; that he should not molest Mrs Belcher in any way; that he should take out a prohibition order; and, further, that he should pay the costs of the action. For failing to furnish income tax returns Horace Broadhead was fined £3, and James Walter Haliday £2. Annie Veronica Herron (Mr A. D. Mcßae) proceeded against Alexander Herron (Mr W. D. Campbell) for separation, maintenance, and guardianship orders in respect of herself and four children. The case was dismissed. The Weather. Dull and threatening conditions during the day gave place in the evening ! to heavy rain, which continued throughout the night. Juvenile Lodge. The fortnightly meeting of the Boys' .Department of the Loyal Timara Lodge of Oddfellows was held cm Wednesday, Bro. Norman Burdon presiding. A wel- [ eome was extended to Bros. John Simpson and Fred Trounce, official visitors from the adult Lodge, and to Sisters Annie Williams and Thyrza Kelly, official visitors from the Girls' Lodge. One new member was initiated. The superintendent gave another lecturette on "Shields" as portrayed in the emblems of the Order. The president and vice-president, Bros. Norman Burdon and Stanley Blanchard, were appointed official visitors to the next meeting of th* Girls' Lodge. Cricket. The annual meeting of delegates of the South Canterbury Cricket Association was held last evening, Mr G. P. Wood presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The chairman remarked that he had never before in the history of the Association seen such a creditable balancesheet. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr B. Mac Donald; president. Mr G. P. Wood; vice-presidents, Messrs T. W. Lynch and W. Thomas; treasurer, Mr F. S. Cave; secretary, Mr M. Angland; delegate to New Zealand Council, Mr P. D. Mansell; auditor, Mr L. E. Eaton; executive, Messrs James Kennedy, A. B. Herdman, W. W. Grant, I. Cunningham,-1. H. Mac Donald, J. Rosevear (senior clubs), C. Lawrence (Umpires' Association), L. B. Pearson, D. W. Reese, E. J. Fairbrother, and G. E. Wall (junior clubs). The following recommendation to the incoming management committee was carried:—"That the first grade competition consist of not more than six teams." A remit from the South End Club "that in second and third grade matches for a win outright three points shalL be scored, a win on the first innings two points, a tie or draw one point each," lapsed, and it was moved as a recommendation to the management committee that the English system of scoring apply to all grades. On the invitation of Mr M. Angland, the patron, Mr B. Mac Donald, made the presentation of a photograph of members of the executive to Mr G. P. Wood, describing him as the father of cricket in South Canterbury.
TEMUKA.
CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. The Temuka Caledonian Society's forty-first annual social was held on Wednesday. Progressive euchre was played till 10 p.m., prize-winners being:—Mrs W. F. Evans and Mr W. Seeler, Mrs E. Higinbottom and Mr W. F. Evans. After supper Mrs Sinclair and pnpils entertained the company ■with exhibitions of Highland and fancy dancing. A dance followed, Mr W. Seeler being M.C. Obituary. By the death of Mr C. McAuliffe, Temuka loses another of its pioneers. He was born at Castle Island, County Kerry, Ireland, on May 25th, 1839. In 1861, he was married to Miss Mary Ahearn, of his native town, and she predeceased him eight years ago. With his wife and family he landed in Timarn in 1874, and settled in Temuka, where he followed the occupation of a fencer and drainer. Of a family of nine, the survivors are:—Mr Michael McAuliffe, of Invercargill; Mr Daniel McAuliffe, of Temuka; Mrs P. Lynch, Milford; apd Mrs T. Orr, Timaru. There are also 24 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchil-dren. The funeral, which took place on Tuesday was largely attended by relatives and friends from all over the district, including the Mayor (Mr T. E. Gunnion). The pall-bearerr were his two sons, Messrs M. and D. McAuliffe; Mr P. Lynch, and T. Greelish. The Bev. Father Moynihan celebrated Requiem Mass, and the Rev. Father Mcßreen officiated at the graveside. ORAM.,. Mrs L. E. Williams presided over a meeting of the combined committees of the Orari and Woodbury Women's Institutes to mrke arrangements for the exhibition of arts and crafts on November 27th. It was decided, at the request of the Geraldine Sketch Club, to add a further section to the schedule for work done by members of the club. In the curio and antique sections it was decided to make no entry charge for exhibits. Admission to the exhibition was set down at 6d, while 9d will be charged for afternoon tea. The offer of the Girl Guides to help with the afternoon tea was accepted. The matter of advertising was left in the hands of the secretary to arrange. In the competitions it was decided that prizes be ss, 4s, and 2s fid. Offers of priaes were received f rom Mesdames J. S. Barker, G. A. M. MaedonaJd, Sharp, and Miss Tripp. For the programme of music for the evening it was arranged that each of the Instituted should be responsible for providing six items. The matter of allocating space to the various sections and of appointing judges was left to the next meeting. All members will contribute towards the afternoon tea. Mr Jind Mrs Melville Jamieson (Christ-church) are the guests of Mrs G A. M. Macdonald. Orari estate. Airs G. I, Hamilton is on a short visit to Christcharch. At the weekly shoot of the Winchester Miniature Rifle Club A. De Renxy won the trophy presented by Mts J. K. Scott.

A meeting of the committee and the staff of the Geraldine District High School was held on Wednesday night to complete arrangements for the school fete, which will be held in the Domain next week. Mr A. M. Fyfe presided. It was decided that no charge be made for admission to the grounds. The Football Club was granted permission to hold a match on the oval during the afternoon. The following stallholders were appointed:—Flowers, Mesdames Wallach and Fyfe; work, Mesdames Hatton and A. Fyfe; sweets, Miss Callanan; tea stall, Mesdames Walker and Henry, lady members of the staff, and senior High School girls; ice-cream, Miss Mathieson; soft drinks, senior boys. It was resolved to run a few sports events prior to the football match.
