LABOURER FAILS.
— DEFICIENCY OF £BB/10/6. A deficiency of £BB 10s 6d was shown in the bankrupt estate of Patrick Joseph Connolly, Ashley, labourer, a meeting of whose creditors was to have been held in Christchurcli yesterday, but lapsed for want of a quorum. There were no assets. The deficiency amounted to £BB 10s 6d, all owing to unsecured creditors, as follows: —J. McClary (Oxford), £l2; George Quigley (Loburn), £11; H de la Cour (Oxford), £l6; D. O'Brien (Oxford), £22 lis; A. Lange (Oxford), £5 16s; A. Dickie (Oxford). £7 16s; Jas. Cook and Sons (Oxford), £9 2s 5d- North Canterbury Hospital Board, £4! Bankrupt, in his statement, said that upon returning from the war in 1920 he was employed by the Public Works Department as roadman on the Ashley Gorge road urltil it was taken over by the County Council in 1927. He later was given work by the Ashley County Council, and was still employed by it at lis per day. His average weekly earnings were not more than sos. He lived in the Council's roadman's hut, and supplied all his own fuel and provisions. Recent wet weather had prevented him from earning his average wage for some weeks past. He was slightly injured in an accident last July, and was in the Christchurch Hospital for a week. He was unable to resume work for three weeks after coming out of hospital Ho attributed his position to the low average wage he had received, together with his recent loss cf work through the accident; and to the increased cost of obtaining supplies in country districts.
