PARKING IN SQUARE.
MR J. S. HAWKES' PROPOSAL. . ~~ A suggestion providing for the parking of motor-cars in Cathedral square was made by the secretary of the Canterbury Automobile Association (Mr J. S. Hawkes) to a representative of The Press yesterday. At present when a motorist wishes to make a visit to the Chief Post Office on business he has to look roiind for a convenient place at which to leave his vehicle during his absence, which is generally a difficult matter for the reason that cars are allowed to be left often three or four deep and facing in various directions To improve matters in this respect, Mr Hawkes suggests that cars should be allowed to park between that part of the Post Office facing the north aide Of the Square and the north corner of the Royal Exchange Building, twenty feet being left clear at both ends in order to comply with the by-law on the subject. The cars would be parked nose-in to the buildings, so that when it was desired to use them again they could be backed out and thus be driven away without any unnecessary delay. Mr Hawkes estimates that the adoption of euch a system, which he has brought under the notice of the chairman of the By-laws Committee of the Citv Council (Cr. D. G. Sullivan M.P.) would enable at least three times as many vehicles to be parked outside the Post Office as is possible tinder the system at present in operation. : 'Of course," he said, in explaining the proposal, "room would be left for bicycles, a space of ten feet being provided for such a purpose between the oars and the footpaths. The ten minutes' limit would apply to all vehicles so parked, as at present t would suggest," he said in conclusion "that if approved by the City Council the system be extended so as to include other portions of the Square."
