OTAGO'S NEW DREDGE.

The new dredge Ot&kou, which has been constructed by .Messrs Fleming and Ferguson, of Paisley, Scotland, to the order of the Otago Harbour Board, at a cost of £124,876, delivered at Port Chalmers, is due here next month. The dredge works with hoppers arid is 256 ft in length, with a 48ft beam, and her loaded draft is 15ft 9in« Her full load capacity is £OOO tons, and this can be dredged into the vessel in two hours. The engines are of the inverted compound surface condensing type generating 1450 horsepower. When fully loaded the Otakou will steam 9 knots, and 10j knots when in light trim. Steam is generated iD two Babcock and Wilcox water tube boiler?, and the furnace heat is supplied by oiL The Otakou, it is interesting to note, is an oil burner. The dredge is splendidly finished, and is very powerful. She is fitted throughout with electric light, and the crew's quarters have every convenience.
