LAWN TENNIS.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. DELEGATES' ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Teuoii Association was held last night, Sir W. N. Seay presiding over a good attendance. In moving the adoption of the annual report and statement of accounts, which has already been published, Mr Seay said that he had to congratulate the committees who had carried out the work of the Association during a successful year. In connexion with the senior competition, he did not think the present arrangements were very satisfactory. In some of the matches it was noticeable that some teams were far too weak. It was a difficult question, and the Match Committee had given it a great deal of consideration but h3d evolved no alternative system. It was an admitted fact that there were not -4 first-grade ladies in the province. He suggested a separate competition for the ladies, with occasional combined tournaments on allotted days in the season. The Junior Association had made good progress, the Dominion junior tournament being a great success. Such a tourney was costly, but it was probably money well spent. A small loss was diEclosed by the balance-sheet on the general account and on the Wilding Park account. It was necessary to increase the revenue from the Park. The sum of £240 was derived from competitions and the hire of courts, biit £SOO should be taken annually to face the ever-increasing problem of depreciation. The average life of an asphalt court was reckoned at 18 years, but the asphalt courts at the Park did not seem to be holding up as well as they should. The average depreciation on these courts he had estimated at £3oo a year. The bitumen courts would last much longer than the asphalt. Wilding Park was a wonderful asset to the province, but he would stress the need for more revenue. The secretary, Mr R. Browning, pointed ont that the Association had had a lean year as far as fixtures were concerned, and, considering this fact, the position was very satisfactory. For the coming year there was a prospect of a visit of an Australian team and the possibility of an important game in Christchurch, added to which the locale of the New Zealand championships was not yet fixed. The report and statement of accounts were adopted. Officers for the year were elected as follows.*—President, Mr J. H. Kirk; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Goss, W. N. Seay, and P. R. Harman; secretary and treasurer, Mr K. Browning; delegates to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs G. Gore, G. L. Berry, W. Goss. and H. L. Wilkinson; handicappers, Messrs W. S. Sotnerville, S. W. Field, and R. Browning; selectors, Messrs W. Goss, P. R. Harman, and R. Browning; Match Committee, Messrs W. N. Seay, W. Goss, P. R. Harman, J. Mercer, S. W. Field, A. Borrows, W. Ordinary Meeting. The ordinary monthly meeting of delegates was held after the annual meeting of the Association. Mr W. N. Seay prMiding. Applications for affiliation from the ot. James's Tennis Club and the Rangiora Lawn Tennis Club were granted. A letter was received from the Wellington Association pointing out that at the annual meeting of the Zealand Association, a delegation was heard from the New Zealand Catholio Tennis Association on the question of the application of this body for affiliation direct to the Dominion Association. The Wellington Association felt that affiliation should be made with the local associations, who would b© »eriou»ly anected in the event of the Catholio Association's affiliation to the parent body being granted. "As far as this Association is oohcerned, we have had no intimation of any such move as is suggested in the letter," said Mr R. Browning. "Catholio Clubs in Christchurch are among our strongest affiliated members." It was decided to reply to the Wellington Association to this effect. .Reporting on behalf of the Ground Committee, Mr W. Goes said that everything was in good order at Wilding Park. The grass was oommg away well and a fine lot of courts should be available for the coming season. Unfortunately it was not possible to have the remainder of the bitumen courts top-dressed with "Colfix" as one had been at *he expense of the president, but funds were not available In moving that a of 2s 6d per senior member of affiliated clubs be made for the purpose of the maintenance of Wilding Park in the coming year, Mr W. Goss said that such a levy was absolutely necessary for its upkeep, in maintaining the park as the premier ground in New Zealand. Inter-Club Competitions. The Match Committee reported having approved of the following programme of mterciub competitions lor the coming season:— Senior Competition—Teams of four women and four men; to commence on the third Saturday in November; not more than six teams to be allowed to enter; three grass courts to be allotted for each match. Angas had been two prominent members of the club, and both bad put up splendid performances. The speaker especially congratulated Mr Angas on his record.
