RANGIORA. The annual (lance of the Bangiora High School Ex-pupils' Association was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening. Music was supplied by Breach's Orchestra. In aid of tho prise fund of the Methodist Flower Show, a concert, organised by Miss Vivienne Taylot, was given en Wednesday. The programme .ineluded pianoforte duets, vocal solos, recitatiouH, aud instrumental music. At the close of the entertainment, Miss Taylor and the performers were accorded a vote of thanks. At the meeting of the Star of Bangiera Lodge on Wednesday, N.G. Bro. F. Hunt presided. The Grand Lodge wrote stating that the executive had resolved that ail contributions to the central funds mutt be forwarded quarterly in advance and claims on the central medical and dispenaaary funds will in future be paid at the end of each quarter. The Loyal Bangiora Lodge forwarded an invitation to be represented at its 69th anniversary dance. The invitation was accepted. The following officers were elected:- N.G.. Bro. H. Word has been received of the death •f Mr A. Biggs, brother of Mrs G. H. Cotes, of Kaikoura. Ho had been a •uflercr for some months. Tho annual ball conducted by the Lo>ul Heart of Oak Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was a pronounced auceess. Music was provided by a Christchurch orchestra. Extras were supplied by Misses M. Eaton and M. and J. Wareham, and Mr W. Thomas. Messrs H. Davies and I). Doyle were M.C.'s. Mr F. It. Brown, of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association, who has tak'.-ij over a position at Ashbttrton, was tendered a public farewell, and made the recipient of a cheque. Owing to insufficient support, the Kaikoura Racing Club's Boxing Day Meeting will not be held, but a combined pony, trotting, and sports gathering will be held, the Racing Conference having agreed to this course. | CUST. Ou Tuesday evening, by invitation of the Cust-West Eyreton Farmers Union, Mr Alfred Fisher, of Culverden, gave a lantern lecture on his experiences when touring with the Emp l '® farmers. SCARGILL. At the annual meeting of the Seargill Tennis Club, the following officers were elected:—Patrons, Mrs H. ActonAdams, Messrs E. Gardner and T. Roberts; president, Mr B. Johnson; vicepresidents, Messrs H. V. Murray, T. D. Mac Donald, and T. N. Gardner; secretary, Miss Cottrell; committee, Meadames B. Johnson, H. Gallop, T. Roberts, Misses O. Gibb, Stewart, Roberts, and S. Scott, Messrs J. Byan, G. Naisinith, S. Pannett, H. McDonald, H. Gallop, C. Stewart, and A. Stewart. Opening day was fixed for October 12th. A movement is on foot to establish a cricket elub in the district. A ground has been secured at "Tipapa." At a recent meeting of Benedicts it was decided to hold a ball early iii October. The ScaTgill Horticultural Society's annual spring show is to take place this week. Indications point to a smaller entry than last year. Considerable damage was done in gardens by the recent heavy frosts, and the very late season will be responsible for some entries not coming forward. BALCAIRN. The fortnightly social of the Hall Committee was held on Wednesday. Music was supplied by Misses A. Fitzpatrick, E. Carroll, and D. Hurley. Mr D. Crossen was M.C. "Working bees" hare top-dressed the two tennis courts, and everything is in order for the opening, which takes place to-morrow. HIGHBANK. At the annual meeting of the Highbank Tennis Club the following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr G. Vaughan; president, Mr R. J. S. Wilson; vicepresidents, Messrs A. H. Sandrey, J. Penney, and P. Quinn; committee, Mesdames Findlay, Sandrey, Mehrtens, and Miss Dickson, Messrs Mcllraith, Grant, B. Vaughan, T. Middleton; treasurer, Mr J. Adams; secretary, Mrs Grant; auditor, Mr Foreman. The opening day was fixed for October 12tbJ' ■ • r ISLINGTON. The opening of the new social hall at Islington was celebrated by a dance. Among the numerous guests were Sir Francis Boys (managing director, New Zealand Refrigerating Company) and Lady Boys. The hall was beautifully decorated. Bennett's orchestra supplied music, and Messrs H. Dent, H. Wilson, and W. fi. Jones acted as M.C.'s. Mr J. Leslie, chairman of the Welfare Committee, congratulated the committee and the people of Islington on their united effort! in making the enlargement of the building possible. Sir Francis Boys said the Islington peoi le had. always assisted the company in works of social progress, and he predicted the time when the hall would not nearly meet the requirements of the district. He was hopeful of Islington and of everything in it. He expressed pleasure in being present at tho opening of the new building, wished the committee every success in its future efforts, and paid a high tribute to Mr Leslie, the chairman, and former manager of his company's Islington branch, calling him the Grand Old Man of Islington, and appealing for cheers for him. These were heartily given, and Sir Francis was heartily applauded u he resumed his seat.
HORNBY. The School Committee met on Wednesday, Mr F. Richards presiding. The teacher's report showed that the roll number was 315 and the average attendance 291. The Orange Lodge advised that it was unable to make any reduction in its hall charges for entertainments. it was agreed to participate in the trip to the Oxford open-air schools on October 12th. An account from the Education Board regarding building and furnishing the clinic was left in the hands of Mr McTeigue to enquire into. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the Railway Department pencilling December 7th or 14th for the annual picnic, and the headmaster was directed to place the following places, Corsair Bay, Diamond Harbour, Ashburton, Oxford (round trip), before the parents, for selection by- ballot. Mr Vogel gave a report of meetings of the Committees' Association. Messrs Thomson and McTeigue were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. A meeting of the District Clinic Committee was held on Wednesday, Mr Miller presiding. The nurse's report showed that Prebbleton infants were nearly treated, and Weedons and Springston schools would be taken early in October. Replies were received from Rolleston, Halkett, and Greenpark declining to participate in the clinic. The Riccarton School Committee is to be notified that there was objection to its inclusion in the clinic subject to the approval of the Health Department. Arrangements were made for the care of the clinic, expenses to be divided and borne by the schools incorporated. Dr. Telford and Mr Kershaw, representing the Health Department, accompanied by Mr Penlington, architect to the Canterbury Education Board, visited Hornby on Tuesday to inspect the sewerage system of the school, which has been held up by a stoppage in the septic tank. During his stay Dr. Telford also visited the dental clinic. He appeared to be satisfied with the construction and equipment. Miss 8.. Park, extra assistant at Hornby School, having obtained a sole charge school at Mount Grey Downs, terminates her engagement at the end of the month.
