MISSION STEAMER'S MISHAP.
LLOYD'S AWARD TO OFFICERS
AND CREW.
[THE PKEBB Special Berries.]
AUCKLAND, September 25
An award of £2OO to the officers and crew of the Mission steamer Southern Cross has been made by Lloyd's as the sequel to the mishap to the vessel some time ago off Norfolk Island when, under very trying circumstances, a jury rudder was rigged to bring the vessel back to Auckland. Out of the £2OO an amount of £75 is to go to the chief officer of the vessel, Mr J. W. Jones, who dived overboard and fastened cables to the rudder. After the mishap a claim for £1547 was made to Lloyd's by the Mission authorities, with a strong recommendation that recognition should be made of the work done by Mr Jones. Cabled advice has been received in Auckland that the underwriters have awarded £ISOO in settlement of the claim. In expressing the greatest satisfaction at the settlement and the £2OO award in addition, the Mission authorities express appreciation of the assistance rendered by Mr R. Smith, Lloyd's surveyor at Auckland.
