Ho also presented her with a cheque from the linn. Hotel Burned.

The Rapahoe 'Hotel, at- Seven Mile, Was totally destroyed by fire early this morning, th*i inmates being roused just In time t» enable them to escape. The outbreak is said to have started in the kitchen. It was lirst noticed by Messrs K. Spiera and Carrutkers, who were motoring to Kapahoe. The flames had it strong hold upon the kitchen and din ing-room at the rear of the building, and wrr« burnt in (j through the roof on one side when tho alarm was given. The inmates, about twelve in number, made a hurried escape, saving only a few personal effects. In the absence of a water supply nothing could be done to tight the flames. The licensee, Mr .J. T. Doyle, had £4OO insurance on the stock! The building was owned by Mr It. Foscliich, and is said to have been insured.

Tho insurances on the building were € 1800. Mr R. Posehich intends to rebuild at once.

Beefton School of Mines.

A meeting of those interested in the resuscitation of the Beefton School of Mines was held yesterday, Mr I. Patterson presiding. It was resolved that •tops be taken to reopen the school. The following officers were elected: —Presi cleat, Mr I. Patterson; treasurer, Mr J as. Patterson; secretary, Mr W. B. Auld; auditor, Mr H. Cooper; council, Messrs Watson, W. Morris, O'Brien,

Wood, J. W. Patterson, R. A. Stewart, i\j. A. McEwen, T. R. Hogg, and Lawn. Jt was resolved that a letter be sent to the Minister for Mines notifying him that a council had been appointed, and that the school was ready to function, and that the council proposed to advertise for a director Immediately. The secretary reported that Mr W. R. Godden had given a number of mining text books to the school.

Athletic*.

The annual report of the West Coast Centre of the Cycling and Athletic T'nioii, to be presented at the annual meeting on Saturday, says that the 1928-9 season was a record. in au, 18 clubs were affiliated, and five permits were granted. Notwithstanding ♦hat two of the clubs who put on the largest programmes, Greymouth and Runanga, did not function the registrations for the season constituted a ncord New clubs affiliated were Bt. The Hokitika ladies' hockey team followed their challenge for the Brooks Cnu held by Reefton, to Reefton, where XS wire defeated by the home team by three goals to two. Opossum Skins. The number of opossum skins stamped at Hokitika for the present season was: Westland district 13,695, Buller district M», Grey district 381, total "."5.
