Young, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. James Cowie, charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, was convicted and fined 10s and costs 10s. ,_ . . David Carey was charged with being in arrears of maintenance to the extent of £66 15s, under an order in favour of his wife. Defendant, who did not appear, was • sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. Thomas Groves was charged with receiving from some person unknown one pair of men's boots, valued at 6s 6d, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., well knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained. On the application of the police the case was adjourned for a fortnight to enable defendant's counsel to appear. . • . ■ , . Arthur Garlick was charged "with being on licensed premises after hours. He Pleaded not guilty, and was convicted and fiDed 30s and costs 10s. .... There was a good attendance of members at the adjourned annual meeting of the Lyttelton 'Rowing Club, the captain, Mr W.Bradley, presiding. The* annual report and balance-sheet showed that the position of the club was highly satisfactory, the club having accumulated valuable property, including a shed and a fleet of boats. There was also a credit balance at the bank. The following-officers were 'elected: — Patron, the Mayor (Mr W. T. Foster) ; vicepresidents, Messrs I". D. Kesteven, H. Ballin, J. Hughes, R. Whitford, and Dr. C. : H. Upham; club captain, Mr W. Bradley; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Burnip; committee,. Messrs C. Williams, R. Sneddon, V. Gilmore, P. Serra, E. Sinclair, H. May, and W. Butcher; delegates to C.R.A., Messrs V. Bradley and P. Serra; selectors, Messrs R. Sinclair and B. Sneddon. The appointment of a president was left to the incoming committee. The retiring president, Mr H. Ryder, who had been president since the inception of the club, ' was unanimously elected an honorary life member. It was decided to open the season on November 2nd. Obituary. Mrs George Hillier, of Cornwall road, whose death occurred last week, was the youngest daughter of Mr C. Moir, of Naval Point, it being the second bereavement in th» family wi'.hin a few months. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. F. Tylee, a service also being held in the house.
