AVIATION.

HUGE BRITISH AIRSHIP INFLATED. FIRST TRIAL WITHIN FORTNIGHT. (CSITED PBSSS iSSOCIATIOK—ST EIJSCTKO TELB3BIPH -COPTSIOHT.) (Received September 24th, 7.8-5 p.m.) LONDON, September 23. The airship RlOl has been inflated, and is expected to make its first trial within a fortnight. The "Daily Telegraph's" aviation writer points out that the airships RIOO and RlOl are in danger of being criticised as failures unless they attain an average speed of 75 miles per hour, independent of the wind, with a maximum speed of over 80 miles per hour. The RlOl, however, will be handicapped on her first trials by the fact that only four out of the five heavy oil engines with which she has been fitted will be available for propulsion. The writer adds: The public will be advised to remember that when the full programme is completed the RlOl will have the desired speed capacity. —Australian Press Association. [For about nine weeks mechanics have been busy inflating the RlOl at the rate of 1,000,000 feet weekly. The RIOO, which is the largest airship in the world, is already floating in her hangar. The RlOl is being constructed by the Air Ministry at the Royal Airship Works, Cardington.] WHITE CLOUDS OF FOG. GERMAN AEROPLANE TESTS. HAMBURG, September 23. Seven aeroplanes carried out tests with fog-producing apparatus yesterday. A solid wall of white cloud enveloped the airport. Motor-cars approaching it stopped, as the drivers were unable to see two yards in front. After twelve minutes the apparatus was stopped and the fog drifted out to sea. It is considered possible to screen effectively the whole countryside or coast-line.—United Service. GRAF ZEPPELIN'S ARCTIC FLIGHT. (Received September 24th, 9.30 p.m.) BERLIN, September 23. Financial arrangements have been completed for the Graf Zeppelin's Arctic flight in the spring of 1930. Her personnel will number 46. —Australian Press Association.
