PERSONAL. (SPZCXAX. TO TH» SBXBB.) GBEYMOTJTH, September 24. Mr C. King, of the Greymouth P. and T. Department, has received notice of his transfer to Ashburton. Mr G. Doig, of the Chriatehurch branch of the Bank of New South Wales, who has-been relieving at the Westport branch, returned to Christchurch to-day. Messrs F- Freitas (West Coast) and E. Snow (Nelson) leave after the representative match to-morrow, to take part in the North v. South Kugby match at Wellington on Saturday. * Miss M. King .(Runanga) left to-day on holiday to Wellington. Mr T. Eldon Coates has been re-elect-ed president of the Greymouth Jockey Club. I Mr J. G. Herdman, Christchurch man- [ ager for Dalgety and Co., Ltd., arrived this afternoon. Mr A. E. Werry, who is leaving Reefton, was presented; by the members of St. Stephen's Church with a fountain pen. ! Mr and Mrs Ivan Barkle (Coalgate) arrived this.. afternoon on a visit to relatives in Greymouth. Mrs Hay.. arrived to-day from Wellington, on,"a visit to her brother, Mr T. E, Y. Seddon. Mr T. Quirk (Gisborne) arrived today and went on to Hokitika. ! A Picnic Ground. During the past day or.two TeKinga on the shores of Lake Brunner, has become popular as a picnic ground. In view of the probability that during the coming season there will be a large number of visitors to the district, pro-perty-owners in the vicinity of Cashmere Bay are making the surroundings attrac tive. The extensive growth of blackberries on the shore of the Bay has been cut and burned, and grass is being sown. The sports ground has been cleaned up, while the track round the Bay is also to be put in order. : Bugby. The Nelson Bugby football team arrived this afternoon, and were entertained by the West Coast Bugby Union
at a presentation of the musical comedy "Bip Van Winkle," by the Hokitika amateurs this evening. Fixe Damage. Considerable damage was done in T. Crankshaw's tailoring workroom during the fire io Coates' buildings in Mackay street last evening. A considerable number of suits, in various stages, were; damaged by water and scorched by fire. Mr Crankshaw estimates his loss at £4OO, part only being covered by insurance. The fire, which started in the tobacconist and hairdresser's shop conducted by Mr John Dumble, directly below, was caused through the gas under the water-heating apparatus being left alight and setting fire to the adjoining woodwork.
