NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The Girls' Physical Culture Hockey Club wound up its season on Monday with a social. There was a good attendance and a very enjoyable time : was spent in dancing and music. During the evening Miss F. Sehluter presented Mr Les. Smith, the physical culture instructor, with a set of military hair brushes. At a meeting of the Sheep Dog Trials Committee in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund, the Mayor (Mr C. S. Ayers) presided. The treasurers statement showed the receipts to have been £52 19s 6d, and expenses £l3 17s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £39 2s 3d. It was decided to pay the sum of £34 into the Mayor's Relief Fund, and the treasurer to hold the balance for any claim' for unpaid prize money. The Mayor expressed his thanks to the dog-owners, Mr T. White, and the general committee, and all who had given their services in making the trials a success. Fire destroyed a four-roomed dwelling on the Oxford road between Rangiora and Fernside about midnight on Saturday. The house was Owned by Mr G. Gracey and ocupied by Mr S. C. Walpole, who was away from home at the time. The building was insured in the Northern Office for £llO. On Monday evening at the Orange Hall a fair attendance of the W.E.A. Class listened to a lecture from Mr A. J. Ferguson on "Flowering Plants." The talk was illustrated by lantern slides. It was decided to close this year's session with a social on October 14th. CHEVIOT. At a meeting of the committee of the Cheviot R.S.A. it was decided to hold the annual reunion on Saturday. It was reported that members of the executive of the ChriStcllurch R.S.A. and a party of artists would be present. The annual ball was set down for October 3rd. In the Presbyterian Hall the members of the St John's Bible Class entertained the members of Knox Presbyterian Bible Class at a social, the guests being welcomed by the Rev. G. Widdup. Items were contributed by Misses E Willcox and J. Burgess and the Rev. G. B. Jardine, the balance of the evening being spent in games and competitions. Mr P. A. Barnes presided over the annual meeting of the Spotswood Tennis Club. The annual report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit of £ll, were adopted. It was decided to have the courts put in order and top-dressed and to open the season on October sth. His Lordship the Bishop of Nelson visited the Cheviot parish on Sunday last. A unique exhibit, so far as the a number of fair-sised fruit. SEFTON. In the Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon last, a memorial service was held to unveil the photograph of the late Rev. David A. Anderson, who was minister of the charge from WW to 1906. The church was well filled, with an appreciative congregation, the late minister having endeared himself to a large number of his people, and also to those outside his own church. The memorial is the gift of Mr J. R. Simpson, of Lismore, a previous member and omoe-bearer of the Sefton Church, and was unveiled by Mrs Thomas Wyltie. The Rev. J.. Farrar had charge of the service, assisted by the Moderator, the Rev. W. R. Hutchinson, of Rangiora, and the Rev. G. Hercus, of Kaiapoi, gave the address. The choir from the Rangiora Presbyterian Church sang anthems and a solo was given by Mr C. Keir, Mr Gibbs Jordan, of Rangiora, officiated at the organ, and favourite hymns of the lata minister were sung. WEST EYRETON. At the annual meeting of the West . At times it has been very wintry. Friday was exceptionally cold with sleet and snow, it being one of the worst days this season for young lambs. The growth of grass ; s slow owing to hard frosts, which are likely to continue so long as there is a heavy coating of snow in the back country. LINCOLN. The Rev. A. H. Fowles completed his series of lantern lectures to the Presbyterian Bible Class by a most interesting lecture on the Solomon Islands. The ?even lectures have been verv weil attended and much appreciated. Mr Hector Mcintosh, on behalt of the class, expressed the gratitude ot the class for the trouble Mr lovrles had taken. . Arrangements have been completea for the Daffodil Show in aid of the Presbyterian Church. If the weather is propitious until then there shotUH ie a verv fine display of blooms. The Lincoln basketball team journey - ed to Ashburton on Saturday to play a return match with St. Stephen s Club. The trip was a verv enjoyable one, although the Ashburton ladies won rather easily by 13 goals to ml. OKAIN'S BAY. The St. John's Ladies' Guild held a bazaar to defray the travelling expenses of the incoming vicar. The various stalls were conducted as follows:—Produce, Mrs Cummmgs and Mrs T. G. Ware; needlework, Mrs Torrance, Mrs Boleyn, and Mrs S. A. Harris; sweets, Miss E. Thacker and Miss M. Tully; afternoon tea. Mrs Joe Harris (sen.), Mrs E. A. Harris, Mrs Mould, and Miss K. On Sunday, in St. Peter's Church, Bishop West-Watson conducted a con. nrmation service. Thirty candidates were presented. After the service the third annua] gathering of parishioners was held in the Parish Hall. After luncheon had been dispensed, the Rev. C. L. Wilson, in welcoming the Bishop and Mrs West-Watson to the parish, said it was with'great pleasure that he could also welcome such a large gathering of parishioners, and it was very gratifying to be able to welcome three former vicars—the Revs T Jasper Smyth, A. H. Julius, and A. C. Pnrchas. The Akaroa hockey team played a return match at Chriatchtirch on Saturday against Digby's and were defeated by 2 goals to 1. TAI TAPU. A meeting of St. Paul's Church Committee was held in St. Paul's Church on Monday evening. The vicar presided. It was decided to appoint a caretaker for the church grounds from November Ist, and the matter was left in the hands of the wardens and vicar. The resignation of the caretaker of the interior of the church was received with very real regret and a new caretaker was appointed. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the financial position and report. It was decided to erect a notice board at the church gate and an offer to present and ereet one was thankfully accepted.

SPRINGSTON. Th« Springston Tennis Club has arranged a friendly match at Springston with a team from Kirwee. A meeting of St. Mary's Church Commit to 1 , was held on Saturday-even-ing. Acheson and the Rev. A. 11. Fowles have commenced Bible teaching in the Springston School under the Xelson system. The Springston Lawn Tennis Club held its opening on Saturday. There was a very large gathering present, and the outlook for the season is very encouraging. Tea was dispensed by the ladies. The local Cricket Club also held its opening day on Saturday, when practice was indulged in. The attendance was not large, but it is hoped that there will be a better turn-out on Saturday, when the competition matches will be" commenced. Springston plays Doyleston at Springgton. DUNSANDEL. Mrs L. Smith presided over the annual meeting of the Ladies' Croquet Club. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs H. Skinner; vice-president, Mrs H. Johnson; hon. secretary, Mrs Jas. Walker: general committee, Mesdames H. A. Brown, John Walker, L. Smith, A. MacPherson, and Jas. Walker; handicappers, Mesdames H. A. Brown, N. J. Brown, Jas. Walker, and John Walker. It was decided to hold compesitions on opening day, which Was fixed for October sth. The final social of the Presbyterian Bible Classes was held in the Sunday School. A ping-pong tournament, young women versus young men, resulted in a win for the latter by 17 games to five. A challenge match was also played between teams representing the Sunday School teachers and the Bible Class members. It ended in a victory for the Bible Classes by seven games- to three. During the evening opportunity was taken to present Mr R. Caldwell with a silvermounted cigarette case in recognition of his services as boxing instructor to the boys' class. The result of the boys' essay competition on "The Other Fellow" was: W. Tweedy 1, L. Mercer 2. Mr R H. Johnston presented the. essay prizes and congratulated the winners on their efforts. LEESTON. Delegates from the societies interested in organising the annual county picnic decided on Monday evening to hold the picnic at Tiinaru On November 30th, provided that this date does not coincide With any counter-attraction. It Was resolved to invite the schools of the district to join the excursion. Mr F. L. Andrewes, Postmaster at Leeston, leaves to-day on transfer to Kaitangata. His successor is Mr J. Sullivan, of Greymouth. BROOMFIELD. A gift evening was tendered to Miss Smart, who has recently moved into the school house. Games and dancing were enjoyed, after which supper was dispensed by the ladies.
