Gyro compasses, with steering and bearing repeaters, have recently been installed in floating factories engaged ; in the whaling industry. The ships in question are the Southern Princess, belonging to the Southern, Whaling and Sealing Company, . Ltd., and the C. A. Larsen, owned by Jolian Kasraussen and Company, of Sandef jord, Norway. The adoption of Gyro eompasses in ships of this class is quite new departure. Such vessels trade, of course, in very highly southerly latitudes, where the magnetic conditions are exceedingly difficult for navigation, and where the advantages of a non-magnetic Gyro compass are most apparent. For some years past, for the same reason, the Hudson's Bay Company have been using Sperry compasses in their principal ships with the greatest benefit. VESSELS WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE OF N.Z.
