SEARCH FOR GOLD IN NEW GUINEA.

UNFRIENDLY NATIVES. (UKITID rBISS ASSOCIATION —BT ELZCTIIO TELEaBAPH -COPYRIGHT.) (Received September 18th, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 18. Gold-seekers who arrived to-day from Papua (British New Guinea) tell a stirring story of their adventures while prospecting in the Tauri river region. The way was difficult, leading over towering lime'stone and the natives, though outwardly friendly, were really hostile. One party was compelled to fire on the natives, who frequently left bunches of arrows in the white men's path as a sign that they were to get out. Ku-Kuku tribesmen, who are headhunters, made two attacks on a camp, but were repelled.—Australian Press Association.
