The Mayor said that hi* experience was that it was difficult to get the DM* of the people interested in two things at the same time; the Lueinpl}mens Fund also had suffered this year owing to the calls made for earthquake relief. They had spent £661 thin year as compared with £715 last year; their balance in hand was £4B 17s 6d, and <there were liabilities amounting to £3O lus. The Mayor added that he very much appreciated the work done "y the members of the committee; if he na« attempted tc do it himself he did no? know "How he would have got on. The annual report was read by Mrs Chidgey. It set out in detail the relief given and also recorded appreciation of Mr Rule's chairmanship of the committee and of the services of several social workers. The Mayor remarked that the report made no reference to the work of the honorary secretary, atd an his motion, and by acclamation, it was decided to add ft clause expressing appreciation of the work of Mrs Chidgey. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. At the close of the meeting the members of the committee were the guests of the Mayor and Mayoress at morning Mr Bule expressed the thanks of the committee for the hospitality of the Mayor and Mayoress. The Mayor said that Mrs Archer and himself were only too delighted to have the members of the committee as their guests, and it was quite » privilege. It was, however, quit® insignificant -empared with the work that the members of the committee put in. He always felt th{it the committee's work was very trying. All applications had to be scrutinised, and while they would like to grant every application made, that was impossible, and it wa» sometimes v«ry difficult to re/use-
