SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Miss J. Paterson, Sefton street, left yesterday for "The Chateau," Tongariro Park. Miss M. May, Dunedin, who has been the guest of Mrs J. C. Oddie, le Cren street, has returned home. Mrs R. L. Wigley, Highfield, has returned from a visit to the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mrs W. D. Campbell and the Misses Campbell, Wai-iti road, have returned from Peel Forest. Miss Elsie Oddie, who has been the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs J. C. Oddie, Le Cren street, has returned to Wellington. Mrs J. S. Kelly, Christehurch, who has been staying at the Hydro Grand Hotel, will leave for the north to-day. WEDDINGS. PBIEST—MADDT&EN. The wedding was solemnised at the home of the bride's parents, Winchester, recently, of Louisa (Cissy) Maddren, second daughter of Mr and Mrs B. Maddren, Winchester, and Owen Stanley Priest, of Winchester, fifth son of Mr and Mrs W. F. Priest, Akaroa. The Kev. A. Blackmore, of Temuka, officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a becoming frock of beige celanese, with trimmings to match her frock. She wore a pedaline straw hat and carried a bouquet of winter roses and spring flowers. Miss Lily Maddren, sister of the bride, who attended as bridesmaid, wore a dress of light fawn celanese with straw hat to match. She carried a bouquet of Bpring flowers. Mr N. Bobertson attended the bridegroom as best man. After the ceremony the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by her niece, Eileen De Benzy. A reception waß afterwards held at Chapman's Tea Booms, Temuka, when Mrs B. Maddren received her guests wearing a gown of navy blue Milanese and georgette, and a navy blue felt hat. When the happy couple left later for the north, the bride was wearing ' a marie tailored costume, smart felt hat, and fox fur. Mr and Mrs O. S. Priest's future home will be in Winchester. ANNUAL DAtfCE. The annual dance of the Canterbury Division of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand was held at the Winter Garden last night, and was particularly enjoyable. The members of the dance committee were Messrs J. Shier, E. H. B. Pe&rcy, J. H. Heyward, E. Harding, and R. C. Poison (secretary). The Bailey-Marston Orchestra supplied the dance music, and an exhibition dance by Miss Molly Jenkinson and Mr Leo Bowden was warmly applauded. The president, Mr H. A. The children's fancy dress carnival held in St. Faith's Hall, New Brighton, in aid of the Sunday school queen carnival fund, was quite a success, and the children and their guardians had a most enjoyable time. The Mayoress (Mrs J. H. Shaw), who acted as jndge, awarded prizes to Jean Kerr, Gordon Evans, Colin Mulholland, Joan Layton, ■Robert Watson, Keith Linton, Peggy Napper, and Sid. BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY. A pleasant afternoon was spent in the Y.W.C.A. Cafeteria, High street, on Monday, when Mr C. F. Harrison presided over a meeting of the presidents and secretaries of the City branches of the British and Foreign Bible Society called to meet the newlyappointed organising and deputational secretary, the Bev. A. W. Stuart. The following branches were represented: Cashmere Hills, City, Linwood, Opawa, Papanui, Biccarton, Spreydon West, St. Albans, Sumner, and Fernside, and Mr A. J. Bridgewater as representing Timaru. The Bev. J. F. Goldie, of the New Zealand Methodist Mission to tho Solomon Islands, paid a whole-hearted tribute to the work of the British and Foreign Bible Society in the Paeifie. Without the aid of the Society in providing Scriptures in the native tongue, the work of missions, he said, would be impossible. - During tho afternoon Miss Vass contributed two songs which were much ap* predated.
