SHIPPING NOTES. There -were fourteen ships in port yesterday, and heavy rain delayed work in the morning._ The weather cleared before noon, and work was resumed. The Katoa should be here on Thursday from Portland and Auckland, and will discharge cement. The Kurow is expected on Tuesday next from Auckland and Wellington, and is to saU tho same day for Wellington. The Waipiata completes loading to-day tor Auckland, and sails via Wellington. The Breeze sailed yesterday for Wellington and WangaDUi, and is due back on Friday to load for Dunedin and Timarn. The Calm is due to-morrow from Wellington, and sails in the .afternoon with car™ for Bluff, Dunedin, and Timaru. The Gale sailed from Wellington yesterday for Tarakobe to load cement tor Lyttelton She if due here to-morrow, and sails for Dunedin and Timaru. The Foxton was bar-bound at Foxton vesterdar, and is to sail from that port to-dav for Wellington. The Mako is expected on Friday from Gisborne, and loads Here for East Coast ports or the North Island. The John is timed to load at Lyttelton on Monday next for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Waikato. The Pakipaki is to sail to-day for Timaru to continue discharge of her New York cargo. The Tasmania is expected to sail on Thursday for Dunedin to complete discharge of her Liverpool cargo. The City of Lincoln is now expected on Thursday from Wellington. She has cargo from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York for discharge. The Cygnet is expected to-morrow from Kaikoura and Wellington, and is to sail on the return trip on Thursday night. The Tees is to complete loading to-day, and sails for the Chatham Islands. The Kanna should arrive to-morrow from Westport, via Bluff and Dunedin, with coal. The Corinna is due on Friday from Dunedin, Oamanj, and Timarn, and loads here for Nelson and New Plymouth. The Kia Ora, which left Wellington on August 27th for London and the West Coast ports of the United via Montevideo and Tenerift'e, sailed from Montevideo on Thursday" evening. _ The new dredge for the Otago Harbour Board, the Otakou, which is now on her way to New Zealand from the Clyde, i 3 reported to have, left Colombo .on Tuesday for Port Chalmers, where she is duo on October 22nd. The Mahia, which sailed from Wellington on July 22nd for New York, Boston, Halifax, and London, arrived at London oa Thursday evening. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's liner Tainui arrived at Wellington on Friday from Napier to complete loading. The vessel will sail from Wellington at 6 a.m. to-morrow for Southampton and London, via Panama A-message received by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company from their liner Tamaroa, en route from London and Southampton, states that the vessel will arrive at Wellington next Tuesday evening. The ship has passengers to disembark at Wellington, and cargo to discharge at Wellington and Auckland. Captain J. Bollons, who ■ came ashore at Wellington last week to undergo an operation, is reported to be making good progress. Captain J. Burgess is acting master of 'the Tutanekai. . News has been received by the Union Company that the Manuka, from Wellington, arrived at Melbourne at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday. She is scheduled to leave again at 10 a.m. to-day for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunelia. and Bluff. Under charter to the Atlantic Union Oil Company, the German tanker Mittelmeer is expected to leave Los Angeles on November 20th with a full cargo of bulk motor spirit for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, and Sydney. She is due at Auckland about December 14th. Certificates of competency were awarded by _ the Marine Department at Auckland during the July-September Quarter as follows : —Captain H. Donald (Compass Syllabus) ; Mr A. J. Lewis (second mate, foreign going); Mr JR. D. Matheson (mate, = foreign going for steamship and fore and aft rig, and master home trade); Mr M. A. McCormick (second mate foreign going); Mr L. T. Harrison (yacht master, New Zealand waters); Mr E. Du Rhone (master homo trade) ; Mr Laws (first mate foreign going) ; Mr J.. Wilkinson (second mate, foreign going). The amount of coal, - including bunkers, shipped at Newcastle during the week ended August 23rd, for places beyond the State, was 10,740 tons, the whole of which represented shipments for Commonwealth ports. For the corresponding period last year the total was 59,283 tons. The Mersey Paper Company, Ltd.,' of Nova Scotia, has placed an order in England for a steamer specially designed for the carriage of paper. The vessel will be constructed by Messrs Earle's Shipbuildng and Engineering Company, Ltd, Hull, the architect being Mr Walter Lambert, of Montreal. A novel feature of the design is the arrangement of the deck brackets above the main deck, so that the hold space will be entirely free from obstruction. The vessel has « capacity for 4300 tons of paper, which will be loaded by double post derricks through extra large hatches into five water-tight compartments. The cost will be 450,000 dollars.
