POWERFUL DRAMA OF ROMANCE. -NOW SHOWING AT EVERYBODY'S. This powerful romance is a modernised version of the famoua old French play, "Adrienne Lecouvreur," originally written for the great actress Sara Bernhardt. And in its adoption to the modern tilm it limes nothing. The acting through rmt is of a particularly high standard, while th<? cosnurae and scenic eifects are wonderful. , , , . Joan Crawford takes the part of Adrienne, a gipM', who later becomes a famous actress, while "Nils Asther plays in the role of the hu ml some Duke Mauritz. destined to become tl.e ruler of the principality of Kuremme. Mauritz, in a particularly dramatic scene, bids farewell to his gipsy love, Adrienne, only to see her many years later. In the meantime the Grand D»ke Mi liken lias assumed tho regency largely bee-au£o oi hiß wife s liinnev. The Uracd Duchess, ably played by A.'leen Pringle, falls in love with Mauritx, hut matters »re intensely complicated by the reappearance of Adrienne, now >« famous »ctri'Hs Mauritz, persuaded by the Duelled to' .-u-ritice his life for his country, agree* to head a revolt, which -rill place him ou the throne. Kinding that ilauritz has regained hii» old low. tho Duchess, in a moment of iutenre jealousy, betrays him, nnd he i<- condemned to be shot for treason. Several dramatic scenes, showing the love tit' ;v. * > women for the handsome Maurtiz and the vanitv of the resent, are skilfully acted by the whole cast, against an elaborate and cnstlv background. When, on the point of heme shot by order of tho regent, who spurns Adrionne's passionate appeals for her lover, Duke Mauritz is savid by a popu.ar insurrection. The regent as deposed, Manri re accepting the Crown. fearing that what he has gained is more than counterbalanced bv tho loss of Adrienne, but m a truly touching scene his fears prove, to be grouiitlle'KS. "Ti.c Gallant Hussar" is the second pielure, a British production, featuring Ivor Novella as the handsome but reckless Lieutenant Alrili, with Evelyn Holt his leading lady, in a delightful drama of Hungarian military life and romance. A supporting programme includes an interesting newsreel and a clever graveyard comedy, entilled "Habeas Corpus." The first-class musical programme, piayea by Mr Albert Bidgood's Orchestra. included: —Overture, "'Desert Song - '; ' Prayer of the Sword," "By the Lake of Geneva, ••The Red Hussar."
