CONVENIENCES.
PROVISION IN THE CITY. During question time at the meeting, of the City Council last evening, Cr. H. T. J. Thacker asked the chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. F. 11. Cooke) what was going to be done tor the provision of conveniences in Tiie City. There was, he said, going to be a fine new theatre in Cathedral square and he wanted to know if any suggestion had been made to the architect for lavatories in this building. This matter was going tc be a very serious consideration. Cr. Cooke said that a report was going to be brought down as soon as the position ii» regard to the Square was settled. Cr. Thacker mentioned th© injunction, ami said that that could be enforced if the building of public conveniences was contemplated. Cr. E. H. Andrews said that some years ago there had been a resolution to cut a portion off the conveniences in Cashel street. What had become of that? "That is not going to be interfered with in the meantime," said Cr. Coo tee. A clause in the Works Committee's report stated that, as a result of further representations made by business people in the locality, the committee had again considered the question of removing the conveniences at the intersection of -High and Cashel streets, but owing to the indefinite position which existed with regard to the proposed central conveniences, it was thought advisable not to take any steps in connexion with the removal of the High street convenience until the other question was settled. The report was adopted.
