HIGHWAYS FUNDS.
AN AUCKLAND PROTEST. (PIUS &SSOCUTIOK TBUSOMJC.) AUCKLAND, September 13. One of the most representative protests yet recorded against any activity of the Prime Minister was voiced to-day when a gathering of over 60 delegates from seventeen local bodies condemned the proposal to interfere with the revenue of the Main Highways Board. The meeting was convened by the Auckland Automobile Association. The City Council, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, seven boroughs, three counties, two town boards, and two road boards were represented, and 22 other local authorities forwarded expressions of opinion. Some very, plain speaking was done at the meeting, and it was resolved that a protest be recorded against the proposals for making all payments to the Highways Board out of loan account, on the grounds that this would be against the spirit and letter of the legislation, and would sooner or later restrict the operations of the Board, and interfere with the benefits to both local authorities and road users. It was resolved to forward the resolution to the Prime Minister, and to members of Parliament, and to join with South Island motorists and local bodies' in a deputation to the Prime Minister.
