FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL.

Of the annual social gatherings held at Leeston during the last decade, none has been more consistently successful than the fancy dress carnival j promoted by the parishioners of St. John's Anglican Church. On Thurs- ' day night a new record was established, more particularly in regard to the number of adults attending in tancy costumes, which was easily tw.oe as large as in recent years. The variety and originality of the children's costumes outshone any previous displav. The Town Hall was decorated to represent a mid-winter English Christmas snow scene, the scheme being decorated by Mrs N. Friberg After the children had left the floor, the adults' dance commenced. Prizes for fancy costumes were awarded as follows: —Best costume, lady : Mrs E. B. Wilkinson (Powder and Patches); most original, Miss Doreen O'Grady (White Star). Best costume, man: Mr C. J Jackman (Chinese Gardener) : &ost original: Mr E. B. Wilkinson (B lotting Paper). The prizes were given bv Mesdames 1. Buchanan and T. A. Stephens and Messrs F Rowell and A. E. Withell. Several novelty dances were held, for which the prizes were given by Mrs C. Fisse and Messrs E. Mclntyre, F. B. Clausen, J. HI Lloyd, and F. I*. Andrewes. The work of training the children for their dancing was carried out by Mrs Jarman and several helpers, and the secretarial duties were shared by Miss Vobkmanand Mrs Jarman. Misses R. Bowden and B. Woodard supplied music for the practices and also played for the children's dancing at the carnival. For the adults' dance Miss Moore's orchestra was engaged. Mr A J Henderson was M.C. for the children, and Mr T. J. Free for the adults. The members of the committee were Mesdames Friberg, Fisse, Jarman, Burnett, H. Smith, T. J Free. Miss Volckman, and the Rev. N Friberg. The following children were present in fancy dress:—

OXFORD TERRACE BAPTIST DORCAS SOCIETY. A very successful afternoon was held recently in the Oxford terrace Baptist Church, when the Dorcas Society held its annual meeting. The church parlour was prettily decorated with spring flowers. . , ~ The Rev. J. Robertson occupied the chair. The secretary (Mrs C. Thompson) gave a very encouraging account 1 of the work done throughout the year. The number of persons helped was 116, and 552 garments had been made and given away One hundred of these were sent to Manurewa Orphanage, Auckland, 3lso 40 to Cholmondelev Home, Go pernor's Bay. Twenty-fiv*» vards of material had been given away. ! During the afternoon itenfe were ! rendered by Mrs Woodward, Misses Velvin. and Stevens. One of the most successful gatherings held this season was the first annual social of the Ouruhia Basketball Club, which was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. The attendance was targe, representatives being present from all parts of Canterbury. Mr J. Don, on behalf of the club, thanked those present for their support and congratulated the members of the team on their meritorious performance during their fiist year in competition games, they having played 16 games, winning 13, drawing one, and losing two. Mr F. Brimlow and Miss PLange won the Monte Carlo and Mr J. Charteris and Mrs N. Smith the lucky spot. Music was supplied by Messrs Bryson's Messrs J. Don and R. Stead were M.C.'s. DANCE AT SUMNER. A very successful dance was held in the Convent Schoolroom, Euston street, Sumner, on Thursday evening The committee responsible for the success of the evening comprised Mesdames Burns. Fox, Smith Beveridge, Cheshire, and Miss Hennessey. Music was supplied by Mrs Trudgeon and Miss Merle Cunningham. A Monte Carlo dance was won "by Miss M. Burns and Mr D. Cronin Those present were Mesdames Cunningham Page, Jull, Prince, McCon ville, McCarthy E. tfNeil, and J- () .Neii. and Misses Pox, Trudgeon Geoghagan, Roswell, McGrath, and Dore«n.
