Bowling Club. The billiards tournament arranged by the Sumner Bowling Club was held in the Pavilion during the week. The results were as follows: First round—Clarke beat Graham, Andrews beat Boulton, Black beat Browne, Boulton beat Henley, C. Allen beat Bichardson, Merry beat Jamieson, K. Allen beat J. Semi-Final—Clarke beat Merry, Biehardson beat Black. Final—Clarke beat Biehardson. Plnnket Society. At a meeting of the Sumner-Bedoliffs branch of the Plnnket Society there were present:—Mesdames A. W. Beaven, B. Claydon, W. Collins, J. S. Cornea, C. Forrest, B. Godfrey, H. Gardiner, A. Trerise, J. Waller, H. Worrall, and W. J. Sim. The nurse's report was read and received. The resignation of the honorary treasurer, Mrs F. C. Cother, owing to ill-health, was reeeived with regret. Mrs Waller agreed to take over the duties of treasurer. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Hunt, Mount Pleasant, and Mr T. Burgess, The Spur, for allowing members to pick violets, which were subsequently sold in connexion with the Plnnket Society's appeal. Final arrangements for the dance to be held next week in the Town Hall were discussed. It was reported that the Bailey-Marston Band had been engaged and that other arrangements were going forward satisfactorily. Committees for the arrangement of the supper and decorations were set up. Esplanade Roadway. The formation of a level road surface adjacent to tbe Esplanade continues slowly, the latest portion to receive attention being the north side of Head street. For many years the idea of a road was not favoured by residents on the beach front, since children, without heeding the danger from motor traffic, were apt to run on to the beach without looking to the right or to the left. Marine Band. The executive of the Sumner Marine Band, who were desirous of erecting a practice room in the Borough Council yard, have been informed by the engineer that he regrets that this is impracticable. A solution of the difficulty which the band now faces would be welcomed from any resident who is interested in its re-formation. Te Bae Kura Park. Under the unemployment relief scheme extensive improvements are being carried out to the approach to Te Bae Kura Park, Redcliffs. Steps have been constructed on the steep track, ft«ea have been planted, terraces formed, and the placing of rock edging has literally transformed a hitherto very untidy corner. Monck's Spur Road. The work of rounding off the corner at the foot of Monck's Spur road is proceeding steadily, and even in its partly finished state the benefits which will be derived from its completion are vary apparent. Esplanade Improvements. A further step in the Beautifying Society's Esplanade improvement scheme has been completed, the formation of the second big concrete and stone kerbing near the band rotunda j being completed. The work of filling | the bed with soil will be commenced at ! ©ace. As Airport. At the request ef Cr. F. H. R. JfevUle a copy of the Aviation Bill was obtained from Wellington and placed on the table at this week's meeting of the Sumner Borough Council. Cr. Neville said that while i\ might possibly be too early to consider the provisions of the Bill as affecting the borough, an eye should be given to the future, since there were at least two stretches of ground eminently suitable for landing places. Visions of aeroplanes taking I off- and landing oA Scarborough were | thereupon conjured up, and it was ! agreed that the borough was very suitable for an aeroplane base. I Scarborough Boat Harbour. I Repairs to the protective wall at the Scarborough Beat Harbour are not j likely to be carried but until a reply is received from the Minister for Marine indicating the extent of the assistance which the Department is prepared to give. Rifle Shooting. With the season drawing to a close, the Sumaer-Bedcliffs (.adits' Miniature Rifle CJub is showing signs of continued improvement. The targets this week were as follows:—Miss Muriel Whjtfield and Miss Connie Bamford, each 63j Miss Pat. Ellis, 64; Mrs G. IJerrard and Mrs C. L. Allen, each 63. The juniors scored:—Miss C. Corser, 69j i Miss Eunice Whitfield, 6?. The senior brooch was won by Miss M- Whitfield and Mi*s C. Bamford, a point each, and the junior button by Miss C. Corser. Sumner Templars. The weekly meeting of Sumner Pride was held in the Parish Hall, Sistsr D. Rutherford presiding. It was deeided that Bro. Baxter should arrange the programme next week. The programme for the evening was word building, the results of which will be announced next Week. KILLED BY FALLING TREE. INQUEST OPENED. The inquest into the death of Edward |>ay Scott Areher, who died in the Christen urch Hospital as a result of a tree falling on nun at Sedgemere on July 9th, was opened yesterday before the Coroner, Mr H. A. Young. Evidence of identification was given by James Basil Tayto. Dr. W. G. Shand, house surgeon at the Christchureb Hospital, stated that the injuries received by Archer were a fraetured dislocation of the spine, a compound fracture of the left leg. and fractured ribs. His injuries were so severe that he slowly saßk and died. The inquest was then adjourned to be reopened at Southbridge on Sunday, September 15th.
