Squadron-Leader Orlebar, of the Royal Air Force, to-day was successful in breaking the world speed record be established earlier in the week, reaching a mean speed of 357.7 miles an Lour in six runs up and down a straight course. His fastest lap wa> covered at 365.1 miles an hour. H< Pew the Supermarine Rolls-Royoe SC machine.
The new record displaces Squadron Leader Orlebar's previous 355.7 miles an hour record, and will be duly submitted as Great Britain's claim to the world speed record. It was at first thought, with stopwatch timing, that the speed was prac-tic-allv the same as on Tuesday, but there was great satisfaction at Caishot when it was learned that the earlier performance had been exceeded. The corrected figures were discovered after the record made bv a special electrical timing apparatus had been worked om and the film developed. Flying-Off.cer Stainforth. in a Glcs-ter-Napier machine, abandoned his attempt on the record owing to engine trouble.—Australian Press Association.
