"THE RINGER,"

THE EDGAR WALLACE PLAT SCREENED. v-V£RYBOI)ys, TO-DAI. Everything that Edgar Wallace ;.;'.» his hajid to seems to turn to the potest goid~e{ melodrama. His stories are atoriet of deep and unwavering attraction. And "The Ringer" is quite one of the most nielodrsr.ati-- and mysterious of all the Wallace works. This story, first staged and now screened, wii'. be presented >.ii ;i.rn form at Kvcrvbo:."'s Theatre th;e veek, the icfniiio prtpa'red by Wallace, the production supervised by !.■■:". «-d the pb-yers selected under his personal advice. Ttie slur; is as widely r»ad i»s any others of Edgar Wallace, the storv of Maurice Meister, Cora Ann Milton, Dr. "Lomond, Mary, and inspector Wembury. Of course, the burning question is "Who is the Ringers" And. as in all Wallace's stories, there is the tantalising conjectures vhich arse round Hester, a cold, criminal, but strangely attractive person, there is l>r. Lomond, with his annoying habit of being in strange places at stranger times; the whole famcus gallery of Wallace portraits ia a typical drama of murders, mysteries, men, and women. It is a wonderfully well mounted picture, with some very realistic scenes in evil dens and along dark streets, and at the Central Police station. Leslie Fabcr, Nigel Barrie, and Lavson Butt, with Annette Beeson as Cora Ann, carry the burden of the acting. The second picture is "A Single Man," starring Ailcon Vringle and Lew Cody. It is another of those exquisitely subtle and h'iman stories of a gay bachelor, and the girl next door, and the bachelor's charming but v liolly unappreciated secretary. MtS6 Pringle, as the secretary, is delicious, and Marceline. Bay, as the girl teaching Lew Cody bo v.* to hit the high Hghtß, is quits in her place. Mr Albert Bidgood has arranged the following musical programme for the Select Orchestra:—Overture, "William Tell" (Rossini;; "Fifth Symphony"* (Beethoven;, "Concert Suite" (Tschaikowsky), "Le Kouiret U'Omphale" (St. Saens), "King Christian'' (Sibelius); selections, "The Golden Cockerel" (Korsakov), "L'Africana" (Meyerbeer), "Street Singer" (Simpson); mano solo by Miss Doreeu Daly, "Refrain de Berceau" (Palmgren) ; "Nocturne" (Chopin), "Intermezzo" from "The 1000-1 Nights" (Strauss), "Nocturne" for «tring quartet (Borodin); fox-trots, "Fascinating Vamp" (Nussbaurn), "Honey" (Henderson); entr'acte, "In a Chinese Temple Garden" (Ketelby).
