ASHBURTON.

PERSONAL. Dr. J. Russell Wells, a New Zealand delegate to the Pan-Pacific Medica] Conference, left on Saturday for Honolulu, accompanied by Mrs Wells. During his absence of about sis -weeks his practice will be carried on by Dr. W. A. Chappie, of London, who is on a visit to New Zealand. Messrs J. R. Dalton (president), G. Tait (vice-president), and F. G. Evans (past-president) of the Mid-Canterbury Farmers' Union, returned to Ashburton from the Dominion Conference on Saturday. A party of 13 people from Ashburton, organised by Mr W. H. Amos, left on a visit to Mt. Cook on Saturday. They will return to-morrow evening. Special Services. Special farewell services were held at the Salvation Army Barracks yesterday by Commandant N. Smith and Adjutant F. Birks, assisted by Lieutenant E. Smith, all of whom leave Ashburton j on Wednesday. In the evening a memorial service was held to the late Mr Arthur Ede, who had been a member of the local corps for 40 years. Idle and Disorderly. Presenting a dejected appearance, Patrick O'Hanlan, Frederick George Sheehan, Douglas Wilkinson, and Robert Samuel Stock appeared before Messrs W. H. Bundle and E. F. Nicoll, J.P.'s, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, charged with being idle and disorderly in that they had no sufficient visible lawful means of support. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin stated that all the accused lived in huts down in the river-bed and had been warned some months ago regarding their mode of living. Constable White said that he had had to make two trips with his car to carry empty bottles away from the huts. He named a number of men who frequented the hut for the purpose of obtaining liquor. Constables Myer and T. W. Round corroborated the evidence of the previous witness. The latter also mentioned that he purchased liquor from Stock. In reply to the Senior-Sergeant, Sheehan said that he had been working in May, but his nerves were in a bad condition. He might have purchased some of the liquor, which totalled 80 bottles. Wilkinson said that he had made money at racing and was employed until the end of May as a cook on a mill. The Senior-Sergeant: What is the cause of your present condition? Witness: I have had the 'flu twice. Liquor, perhaps, has helped. Mr Rundle said that it was quite clear that the aceused did not take any heed of the police warning. Sheehan, Wilkinson, and O'Hanlan were convicted and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. Stock was convicted and discharged, providing he takes a prohibition order out against himself. Sheehan and Stock were further charged with selling liquor without a license, while two charges of assisting Sheehan and Stock to sell the liquor were preferred against Wilkinson and O'Hanlan. These cases were remanded till August 9th. Earthquake Belief Fond. The Farmers' Union and A. and P. Association's subscription list to the Earthquake Relief Fund totalled £205 12s on Saturday. This includes a contribution of £9 8s from the Ealing hare drive. Infectious Diseases. During the past few days three cases of scarlet fever have been reported to the Borough Health Inspector (Mr J. R. Richardson). Dances. There was a good attendance at the dance held by the Hampstead Football Club in the Orange Hall on Saturday night. Mrs H. J. Chapman's orchestra provided the music. To provide for the erection of a pavilion for the Ashburton basketball teams, the students of the Technical School held a uance on Friday evening. The sum of £5 10s was received. Golf. A match between the Ashburton and Timaru Golf Clubs was played at Ashburton on Saturday, and resulted in 5 win for Timaru by 15 games to 3. The first games in the opening round of the Ashburton Basketball Association's competition were played on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine and the grounds in good order. Results:— Seniors—Technical Old Girls A 15, St. Andrew's 9; Technical 10, St. Stephen's 3. Technical Old Girls B and High School had byes. Juniors—Convent 12, St. Andrew's 2; Technical A 10, Hinds 9; Technical B 24, Technical C 2. The games were controlled by Misses M. Richards and E. Knox and Mr K. J. Thompson. In view of the representative matches against the Canterbury representative teams, which are to be played at Ashburton next Saturday, senior and junior practice games were pl::ved after the competition matches. The Ashburton Hich School A and B teams journeyed to Timaru on Saturday to contest matches with teams from the Timaru Girls' H';h Sr-hool. Both visiting teams were defeated, the A team by 23 points to 11. and the B team by 38 points to 5. The former match >vas keenly contested, but poor shooting on the part of Ashburton was one of the factors which cau=ed their defeat. The latter team, as the score indicates, were overwhelmed. Women's Hockey. Senior and junior representative matches -were played between Ashburton and Malvern on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday in fine weather. Sevan-a-Sid*. The flru Rsgby seven-a-tide tournament in Ashbnrton for three seasons was held at the Sho<r Grounds on Saturday. The grounds were in gojd order, and good exhibitions of open play were witnessed. There was a good attendance, much interest being evinced is the final of the senior grade, when Old Boys A met and defeated Hampstead. ilaj-aeid accounted for Old Boys A in the junior grade, while Old Boy* A defeated High School in the fiurd grade. Neither team gained much ground at the outset and play hovered in midfield until Old Boys' backs got going, but Jordan missed his pass. Play immediately went to the other flank, and Clark, securing about twentyfive yards from Hampstead's line, scored a beautiful try, with Stephens (Hampstead) at his heels. Fair converted. Plav was made willing by both teams, Hampstead making strenuous efforts to score and Old Boys making just as determined efforts to stop them. Time was called with Old Bovs attacking. Hampstead 0. Final: Mayfield A 12 v. Old Boya A 0. Within a few minutes of the beginning Mayfield backs got going and Guthrie scored near the posts. The try was not converted. Bowden (Old Boys), with a fine burst of i speed, made a great run down tie line, but was eventually tackled from behind. Mayfield attacked and Murdoch found an opening and kicked a nice field goal. Mayfield had the better of the ensuing exchanges and Whiting scored, Murdoch converting. Mayfield on the whole were too good for Old Boys. Third Grade—First ronnd: Old Boys B S v. Final: Old Boys A 10 v. High School A 0. Old Boys were a little faster than School and maintained a slight advantage throughout. For Old Boys, Bryant and Keen scored tries. Bryant converted one and Keen the other.

Fourth Grade—First round: Technical 8 v. High School A 0; Hampstead 5 v. High School B 0. Final: Hampstead 5 v. Technical 0. This was a close same, Hampstead's good defence being the deciding factor. Bowling Club. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Bowling Club was held on Saturday night, when the president. Mr W. Oakley, presided over a good attendance. The annual report stated that satisfactory entries had been received for all competitions. The following was the result of the club championships:—Singles: J. C. C. MeLauchlan; doubles, T. J. Doherty and J. C C. MeLauchlan; handicap doubles, H. 1 Martin and L. C. Dunn; two-bowl doubles, H. I C. Craighead and E. Me&berry; colt's singles, R. J. Lauresen; rinks, T. J. Doherty, O. G. M. Boyce, J. C. C MeLauchlan, and H. P. Milsora. Four clubs entered in the Bullock pennant competition, and the Ashburton Club was successful. Outside matches were played with the Edgeware and Linwood Clubs (Christchurch). In the county championships the club won the singles, doubles, and rinks. The club was represented at Christcbureb in the Maddisot cup competition, by J. C. C. MeLauchlan, who was runner-up for the trophy. J. Templeton, of the Allenton Club, being the winner. The club was represented in all Centre matches. It was with deep regret that the death of Mr Joseph Watson, who, for many years was a highly esteemed member, was recorded, and the club wishes to express its sympathy with his relations. The balance-sheet showed that the year commenced with a debit of £72 14s 3d, and concluded with a debit of £37 lis lid. Subscriptions totalled £ll7 9s. The assets exceeded the liabilities by £257 4s lOd. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr L. C. Dunn; vice-president. Mr E. Easterbrook; secretary, Mr W. H. Higgins; treasurer, Mr L. C. Dunn; auditor, Mr F. Pritchard; General Committee, Messrs J. McElhinney, T. Hardy, C. J. McEachen, W. H. Woods, H. P. Milßom. J. C. C. McLachlan, W. Oakley; delegates to the Ashburton Bowling Sub-Centre, Messrs tt. C. Dunn* W. Oakley, and E. Easterbrook; delegates to Christchurch Centre, Mr H. Firman; delegate to Ashburton Sports Association, Mr R. Buxton; Selection Committee. Messrs W. R. Lane, S. Maddren, and T. J. S. Doherty; Transport Committee. Messrs T. 3. 8. Doherty, R. Buxton, and T. Willis. It was recommended that the club's opening day be held early in the season. At the close of the meeting the prises and trophies won during the year were presented by Mr W. Oakley.

« RAKAIA.

The annual social and presentation of prizes of the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association were held in the Town Hall on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance. The president, Mr E. E. Oakley, welcomed the visitors and congratulated the competitors on the good work done. Mr Taylor, of Ashburton. presented the Tavlor Memorial Shield to the winner of class A. Mr J. G. S. Wyllie, and suggested that the shield should, in future, be awarded to the best ploughing in all classes. Mr D. Jones, M.P., complimented the Association on its continued success in all classes, making special mention of the splendid teams of horses shown. Messrs J. Wyllie and W. Robertson also congratulated the ploughmen and wished the Association success. Messrs J. B. Wyllie and S. Wilson returned thanks on behalf of the prize-winners. On behalf of the Association, Mr J. Stewart thanked Mr R. A. Oakley for the use of his paddock. Afterwards a very enjoyable dance was held. Music was supplied by Mrs Mitchell's Orchestra, and extras were nlayed by Mr J. Rigby and Messrs J. Langley, S. Connolly, and C. Evison were the M.C.'s.

METHVEN. The annual seven-a-side football and basketball tournament organised by the Methven District High School was held at the school grounds on Thursday. The grounds were heavy, owing to recent rains, but in spite of this some exceptionally interesting games were played. Owing to the large entry of teams in the football and the evenness of the play in the semifinals, no decision could be reached, and the finals were postponed. An afternoon tea booth was conducted by the wives of Methven School Commiteemen, while the girls of the secondary department, under Miss McLeod, had a gift stall, at which produce, poultry, sweets, and sundries were disposed of. About £lO was realised. A silver coin collection, taken at the gate, also realised a substantial sum.
