POLICE RAID ON COMMUNISTS.
♦ ESPIONAGE SYSTEM IN FRANCE. DOCUMENTS SEIZED. (CSTTED PRESS ASSOCIATION"—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—-COPYRIGHT.) (Received July 19th, 9.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 19. Fifty members of the police force conducted an extensive raid on Communists' haunts last night, including the office of the official organ of the Communist Party, "Humanite," and carried off a mass of documents. A member of the staff of the paper was arrested, and also the managing printer. The Paris correspondent of "The Times" states that amongst the documents seized were reports from Communists who are serving in the French Army. The "Humanite" had been advocating at length the holding of an anti-militarist demonstration on August Ist, the anniversary of the outbreak of the war. The raid is said to have revealed the existence of complete plans for this purpose. Other documents contained reports of naval and military armaments, giving evidence of the existence of an elaborate system of espionage. The police also raided the headquarters of Communist youths, several being arrested.—"The Times" Cables, Australian Press Association.
