U.S. TARIFF PROPOSALS

1 CANADIAN PROTEST. RETALIATION BY BRITAIN ? (UNITED PEE3S ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIOHT.) (Received July 14th, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 13. Authentic reports that Canada has protested against the proposed increases in the American tariffs on shingles and lumber drew from the State Department the information that the Canadian Minister, Mr Vincent Massey, had conversed with the Secretary of State, Mr H. L. Stimson, on tariff matters. Signs indicate that the Administration is more concerned over the outcry from Canada than over some of the protests by other nations. Mr Massey s verbal representations are understood also to have embraced the proposed tariff on cattle. Discussions on foreign complaints against the tariff review have been kept simmering by the rumour that intimation has been made of a retaliatory tariff on wheat by Great Britain as a sequel to the increased United States taxes on imports. This is denied in official circles. —Australian Press Association.
