AMUSEMENTS.

"WEST OF ZANZIBAR." A TRIUMPH FOR LON CHANEY. CRYSTAL PALACE, TO-DAY. At Crystal P.lacTTheltr*, thi« week, the film "West of Zanzibar" will head the programme. In the main role is Lon Chaney, and he is assisted by Lionel Barrymore, Warner Baxter, and Mary Nolan. The picture itself is adapted from "The Shanghai Gesture." Cb.anev plays a crippled Lnghshman who comeg to "Africa to track down his deaa wife's lover: there, oat on the deadly Gold Coast, are gathered a denegerate doctor (warner Baxter), the wronged husband, and the other man, who is played by Lionel Barry - more. Mary Nolan is the daughter of Chaney. but is believed bv the colony to be the outer man's child; and* around these four persons is woven a strange and compelling drama of hate and revenge. Lon Chaney again gives a masterlv performance as the man whose bram is twisted by thoughts of jealousy and vengeance; but Lionel Barrymore is equally impressive as the trader who has extracted everything from life and waits cynically for the end. Warner Baxter, as the doctor, has a more sympathetic role, and his scenes with Mary Nolan in the sordid settings of the mean residences give the picture its one note of colour and romance. , The second picture is a light comedy. On to Reno," in which Marie Prevost and Cullen Landis have the leads. Reno is the American place where three months' residence procures one a divorce and no questions asked. It is bright and modern and caustically amusing, and Marie Prevost is as quaint and humorous as ever. Mr Alfred Bunz has arranged the following musical programme for the Svmphony Orchestra: Overture, "Three African Dances" (Ring); "T'Chaka" (Ring), "La Boheme" (Puccini), "Africana" (Coleridge-Taylor), "The Knight Errant" (Somerville), "Largo" (Dvorak), "Flight of the Birds" (Rice), "Rose-Mousse" (Bosc), "The Pink Lady" (Caryll), "Rio Rita" (Tierney). The box plans are at The Bristol Piano Company, where seats may be reserved.
