ADDINGTON NOTES
Personal. Mr and Mrs A. Piper and family (Athelston street) will leave shortly for Auckland, where Mr Piper has been transferred. Mrs F. Beer <Athelston street) has returned to Chiistchurch, after an extended holiday in the North Island. Miss Irene Stone, formerly of Whitleigh avenue, Biecarton, who is now touring with the Bio Eita company, is the guest of Miss D. Falkinder, Macaulay Btreet, Addington. A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the Bowling pavilion, when the Barrington Croquet Club members met to bid Mrs A. Piper "Au Revoir." Games and competitions were indulged in, and a very dainty afternoon tea was enjoyed by all. The last of the season's chrysanthemums adorned the tables. During the afternoon Mrs Piper was presented with a crystal water-jug, as a token of the esteem in which she is held by the members of the Croquet Club. Park Improvements. The Barrington Croquet Club's grounds, in Spreydon Park, have greatly improved in appearance during the last twelve months. Many improvements in the way of fencing, hedges, and gates have made this part of the Park very attractive. Addington Lodge. There was a very large attendance of members and visitors at the meeting of the Loyal Addington Lodge, when N.G., Bro. A. J. Forsyth, presided. Notice was received from the Loyal Kaia Toa Lodge that their evening had been postponed until July 29th. An invitation was received from Washington Lodge No. 28 1.0.0. F., N.Z., to be pre- | sent with them on August sth, when they hope to revive the old custom of an interchange of visits between the two lodges. The invitation was accepted, and it wa§ resolved to meet early that evening, to enable members to attend the function. The ladies' evening, which was to have been held on that date, was changed to July 22nd, when Bro. and Mrs Watkins will entertain the Lodge. A letter was received from the District Secretary stating that the Board of ! Directors was formulating a comprehensive scheme for the relief of those wbo were losers by the recent earthquakes j in Westland. The Lodge decided to postI pone action until more definite advice was received. Reports to hand from the stricken districts show that many brethren on the Coast were heavy sufferers as a result of the disaster. The valuation reports of the progress made by the Lodge during the last quinqennium were presented and discussed. The figures showed a very satisfactory position in that the Lod?e had improved its financial status to the extent of £263 during the five years. It also showed that the membership had been more than doubled during the past nine years. The whole of the surplus disclosed by the valuation will be pa ; d into the District Benefit Fund, for the purpose of paying the contributions of age-1 members. At the coii'lcsion of Lodtie business members from the Loyal Perseverance and Past Grands Lodges were entertained to a game of cards, which resulted in a substantial victory for the home team, the score belne:—Euchre: Visitors 8. Addington 11; cribbage: Visitors 15, Addington 21; a total of o2 games to 23. Burgeseea' Social. A successful social gathering was held last Thursday evening, under the auspice. of the Addington Burgeesee' As-J
sociation. The attendance was verylarge and the novelty dances and competitions were well patronised. The following were the prizewinners in the novelty dances: Monte Carlo, Mr E. Craig and Miss D. Taylor; lucky spot: Mr J. Burford and Miss M. Ford; Tasmanian: Miss M. McAlister and Miss O. Dempsey. The lucky competition winners were Mrs Ball, Mrs Cook, Messrs E. Aiteheson and J. Hamer. Mr M. Clark was M.C. A fancy dance was given by Miss Cathy Walton and Miss Thelma Anning. Rugby lieagne Social. The final of the fox trot competition drew a good attendance at the weekly dance held by the Addington League Social Clab in the Selwyn street Hall. The winners of the fox trot were: Miss Fitzsimmons and Mr J. I'Anson. Miss Daly and Mr Hill won the Monte Carlo. Methodist Chrrcu. The Rev. A. Liversedge presided over a good attendance of officials from the Union and Lincoln road churches at the circuit quarterly meeting. The financial statement was submitted by Mr J. Voss, and showed a small debit balance. Special offernigs were authorised tor the Union Church anniversary on September Ist, the Lincoln road Sunday school anniversary on September 29th, and the Foreign Missions on September 15th. Reports were submitted in connexion with the young people's departments, in which very fine work was being accomplished. Circuit agents were commended for their work in the interests of the 'Methodist Times." Spreydon Church extension was reported, and the meeting congratulated the Durham street Church officials on the commencement of Sunday school work in the Spreydon district.
