SAM WELLER "SWARRY."
WORKING MEN'S CLUB'S BIG FUNCTION. The annual Sam Weller "Swarry" of the Christchurch Working Men's Clnb and M.S.A. was held last night in the Caledonian Hall. There was a very large gathering, the entire club and many visitors being present. The evening opened with the customary dinner, during which the club's excellent orchestra played several items. This was followed by the toast of the King, proposed by Mr J. E. Cooper. The orchestra was then heard again in the overture "Poet and Peasant," followed as an encore by Braga a •'Serenata." Toasts honoured during the evening were: —"Navy, Army, and Air Forces," proposed by Major J. P. Oakes, V.D., and responded to by Mr J. Chisholm; "Club and Its Founders." proposed by Mr A. Peverill, and responded to by Mr J. E. Petherick; "The Visitors," proposed by Mr J. Gray (vicepresident), and responded to by his Worship the Mayor. Mr R. Woodward (Richmond Working Men's Club), Mr Monk (Kaiapoi), the President of the Veterans' Association, Mr Haydon (R.S.A.), and Mr Garlick; "The Management Committee," proposed by Mr W Llovd, responded to by Mr J. E. Cooper; and "The Entertainers," proposed by Mr Moore, responded to by Mr J. Scott. Items were given as follows:—Song, Mr E Dowell; banjo quintette, Messrs Hay, Foster, Barson, Tulloch, and Hand; song, Mr W. Tootnev; songs. Mr P. Donaldson; songs. Mr J. Young; songs. Mr J. Taylor; song, Mr C. Harroway; "Musical Switch," the orchestra, with the Sextette from "Lucia di Lammermoor" as an encore; bones, by Mr H Webb; recitations. Mr B. Holt; and comic song. Mr R. ?rens. Altogether a most enjoyable evening was spent by everyone present, this year's "Swarry" being the most for many years, and reflecting fcreat credit on the 'Management Committee.
