NOTES ON THE RACING.

[THE PBESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, July 11. The Wellington Racing Club were fortunate in regard to the weather for to-day's racing, and the totalisator again showed an increase, i The track was not as good as on the first day owing to the effect of a hard frost overnight. and it was not possible to carry out j Wednesday's procedure of keeping it rolled [ between races. Favourite Fails. On his showing on the firßt day, Fine Acre was backed down to a short price in the Oorunna Hurdles Handicap, but the fall he suffered evidently had its effect, as he was never in a winning position and failed to eo right at any stage. Waltzer essayed to win from end to end. and had an appreciable advantage from Inferno, Fine Acre, Horomea, ai-d Calluna with half a mile to go. Hf was still well clear approaching the last hnrdle, hut commenced to tire, and Horomea tacklca hijn in the run home. The latter gradually wore him down and beat him to thp post by a length. Inferno was five length' away in third place, a length in front of Fm* Acre, who was followed by Calluna, with Master Doon and General Wai tailed off. Horomea s win served to enhance the victory of Amorist on the first day, as she was outclassed by him on that occasion. Four on End. Recent winners in Zarene. Shortly, and Hopwood were the most sought after in the Trial Plate, and the two last-named took part in the final issue. The most prominent of the field before the false rail was reached were Blue Paper, Mahora, Hopwood, Great Lady, and Zarene. When straightened up for " home, Zarene and Hopwood were in charge from Great Lady, Loving Cup, and Shortly Zarene weakened at the distance and Hopwood was left in command. Shortly came with a rattle from the middle of the field, and although getting up in time to beat Great Lady for second money on the post he was unable to catch Hopwood. who had » three-lengths' advantage at the post. Loving Cup was close up to the placed division, and then came Zarene. Air Laddie, Le Champ, and Money Mint. This was the winner's fourth success on end. He is a four-year-old by Bisogne from a Sylvia Park mare, and is endowed with a lot of speed. He was inclined to stop over the final pinch, and was probably lucky that Shortly lost ground at the start, and was not prominent in the leading division until the post was within reach. An Interesting Tussle. The Seatoun Handicap provided a substantia! pool and a close finish. Maori Boy, who had met with interference on the first day, was again installed a good favourite, and his investors were unfortunate not to collect. He made a fast run on the outside parsing the foi'r furlong post, and heßded the then leaders, Giyn Dhu, Justify, Brilliant Light, and Lucre, round ; ng the home torn. He hod a clear advantage leading into the straight and appeared to have the race in hand but Balloon and the" Brillignt closed on him in the last flftv yards, i?nd the trio crossed the line in a bunch. The jiudge declared in favour of Brilliant Lieht by a neck, with a head between Balloon and the favourite Otaurn Lass finished on strongly into fourth place, and was followed by Glyn Dhu. Royal Opera, Hard Gold, and Justify. Brilliant Lisht, a four-year-old hv Aust-alian Sun. owed his success to a welltimed finish, while on the other hnnd Maori Boy wa« not handled to advantaee in msVins his run too early, and h° was found wan'ing at the business end. Balloon was not prominent until the bend >nto th» ntmistht, aid then put in eood work on the ra'ls. The second choice, Justify, showed promise to the home turn, but faded out over the closing stages. Win for Alarle. Alt the acceptors paraded for ths Seeond Hack Steeplechase, the contest for favouritism being fairly evenly divided between Royal y.lm, Alaric, and Waitaaaaha. Askaxi piloted

the field for the first round, and entering upon the second circuit was jo.ned by .iiiaric, ana i"' 3 P a * r snowed '"e way to jboomeraay, Airtight, Kojai Kim, Waitaunaha. 6nu &vu a.ryan. ienreu ai tne tax* turn, ana tioomerday ran up to Aiaric. Altuough the jumping generally was goou, the race was not aevoiu ol acciuents. iioauau fell at the four fur.ong post the first t.ine round, and San Fera tumbled over mm, none Auxuia ooreaus aico througn the mix-up on the ground and took no further part in the race. Koauau sustained a broken leg and had to be destroyed. Bon Aryan crashed at the game Jence in the second circuit when in a rear position. Thr winner had a tairly comfortable task, but can only be considered usetul. Koyal Eim did not impress by his ehort, which couid not stamp him as a National candidate. Boomeruay jumped we 1 ana siiowki nashee of brilliance, but was ' done with half a mile from home. Askari made a little improvement, but Waitaunaha, who did not jump too well, failed to race up to his first day s form. High Pitch Prevails. Investors pinned their faith to Bisox in the Parliamentary Handicap, but she was never in the firing line, and finished in fifth place. After two furlongs had been covered Kuanui took charge from Town Bank, Thurnbell, Anolo, Sing.eton, and Fairy' Herald, and there was no change until the far turn was reached, where Fairy Herald moved up into second berth. Kuanui was first into the straight from Fairy Herald, Town Bank, and Singleton, but was in distress inside the distance. High Pitch, who had not been prominent up to this stage, shot out from the middle of the field,' and passing Kuanui and then withstanding a challenge by Singleton, scored an attractive win by a length from the latter, who beat Fairy Herald by a neck for second honours. Kuanui faded into fourth place, and then came Thurnbell, Town Bank, and Black Mint. The race was run at a slow pace, and this enabled the winner to see out the journey. Singleton again ran a solid race, and finished well. Fairy Herald showed promise at the straight entrance, but the last furlong found him out. Town i Bank was in a good position at the commencement of the home run, but his rider j was disappointed in trying to get the rails, and lost a lot of useful ground in having to pull out. He may have got in the money with a clear run, but would hardly have beaten the winner. Easy for Favourite. Nukumai and Comical were not produced in the High Weight Handicap, and most public attention was paid to King's Jest and Courageous, the former being backed down to a little better than even money first choice. Prince Lu was rushed to the front from the start, and going along the back opened up a big gsP from Aberfeldy and Curtsey, with another break to King's Jest, Modern, Atareria, Beaumont, Glena Bay, and Grand National At the far turn King's Jest moved up and followed Prince Lu, Curtsey, and Aberfeldy into the straight. Prince Lu cried enough when headed lor home. Aberfeldy was momentarily in charge, but at this point it could be seen that the favourite had the issue in hand. He soon had Aberfeldy in trouble, and without his rider being called on he ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Aberfeldy, who, under punishment, stayed on to beat Curtsey by a length. Beaumont was next, with Courageous close up, and then followed Lady Gay, Prince Lu, Modern, and Atareria, with Tresham last. The winner proved himself a class above the opposition, and was not asked to do his best at the finish. Aberfeldy was responsible for a good effort, and evidently suffered no ill effects from his race the first day. Curtsey, a Btablemate of Merry Mint, was a quiet selection, and was always in the picture. Courageous was near the tail of the field until the straight was reached, and then wound up in behind the placed division. j Kaiti Improves. |

Kaiti was adjudged the best proposition j for the Members* Handicap, but there was > also strong support for both Taboo and Marble King, the pool totalling close on £6OOO for a seven-horse race. Quantum, Oration, and Kaiti were most prominent before the course proper was reached but once straightened up for the post Kaiti ran away from the field, and although having to be kept up to his work to stall off a belated challenge from Taboo he beat the southerner comfortably by two lengths. Marble King was half a length away next, well clear !of Taku Tama. Royal Game, and Quantum, 1 with Oration last. The winner improved considerablyr *n his first day's run, and had his opponents in difficulties from the top of i the straight. Taboo was the slowest to move off, and came from the back in the run home to execute a telling finish. Mark Mist Again. As the betting indicated, the finish of the concluding event was confined to Mark Mint and Havering, and Wednesday's result was repeated. Lucky Bag flew out at the start and was several lengths in front at the false rail, Mark Mint heading the re- ' mainder. Lucky Bag stopped abruptly before the distance was reached, and Mark Mint carried on from Black Odin, Bulolo, and Havering. Mark Mint ran away from his pursuers over the final stages, and recorded a very easy win by four lengths from Havering, who beat Taranto by over a length for second money. Black Odin was close up next, and then came Lucky Bag and Austerity. Mark Mint had an effortless win and was an even better horse than on the first dayHavering did web under his big weight, as he had a lot of ground to make up in the straight Bulolo had every ehance. but again cracked up badly when the serious business commenced. Lucky Bag showed a marvellous turn of 6peed and at one stage must have been fifty yar<?4 in front, HANDICAPS FOR TO-MORROW. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, July 11.
